Chapter 5 - The Silent Partner

The criminal investigation picked up rapid momentum following Ian’s sworn deposition to the District Attorney's office.

Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance—no relation to my parents—was assigned to lead the prosecution. He was a ruthless, brilliant prosecutor who viewed child endangerment cases with personal crusade-like intensity.

One afternoon in early May, ADA Vance invited Adam and me to his office in the municipal building for a case update.

"Mrs. Miller," ADA Vance said, gesturing for us to take a seat across from his cluttered desk. "We have officially expanded the indictment against Walter and Gloria Vance. The charges now include felony child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, and witness tampering."

"Witness tampering?" Adam asked, surprised. "Did they try to contact Natalie?"

"Not Natalie," ADA Vance revealed, pulling up a digital audio file on his computer. "Three days ago, your father, Walter Vance, attempted to visit your brother Ian at his residential treatment facility in secret. He tried to offer to pay off Ian's entire two-hundred-thousand-dollar medical debt if Ian signed a recantation affidavit claiming his initial statement was made under the influence of medications."

I shook my head in utter disbelief. "My father tried to bribe my brother?"

"Ian wore a wire provided by the State Police during that meeting," ADA Vance said with a sharp, victorious smile. "We have Mr. Vance on crystal-clear audio offering financial compensation in exchange for false testimony. It was an instant violation of his bail conditions."

"Was he arrested?" I asked, holding my breath.

"Walter Vance was arrested two hours ago at his place of business," ADA Vance confirmed. "He is currently held without bail at the county detention facility."

A heavy silence settled over the room. My father—a man who had spent his entire life obsessing over his reputation in the community, his church standing, and his clean image—was now sitting in a county jail cell in an orange jumpsuit.

"What about my mother?" I asked softly. "Gloria?"

ADA Vance’s expression grew remarkably guarded. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms.

"That's where things get complicated, Mrs. Miller," Vance explained. "Gloria Vance has vanished."

I blinked. "Vanished? What do you mean vanished?"

"When our officers arrived at the Vance residence with the secondary arrest warrant for Gloria, the house was completely empty," Vance revealed. "Her car was gone, her personal belongings were packed, and financial records show she liquidated a seventy-five-thousand-dollar joint savings account at 9:00 AM yesterday morning."

A sudden spike of panic shot through my chest. "She ran?"

"She skipped bail," Vance said nodidng. "The State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service have issued an active fugitive warrant for her arrest. Her picture is being circulated across state lines."

"Marcus," I said, my voice rising with sheer panic, using his first name for the first time. "If she's on the run, if she's desperate... she knows where we live. She knows where Lizzy goes to school!"

"We’ve already taken precautions," ADA Vance assured me immediately. "There is an unmarked police vehicle stationed outside your residence twenty-four hours a day. Lizzy's school has been placed on high-alert lockdown status regarding visitor protocols. No one gets near that child."

Despite his assurances, as Adam and I walked out of the municipal building into the bright spring afternoon, the sun felt cold against my skin.

Gloria Vance was not a woman who accepted defeat. She was a master manipulator who viewed loss as a personal insult that had to be avenged. And somewhere out there in the city, she was watching, waiting, and calculating her next move.
