Chapter 7 - The Trap

The sighting at the park changed the nature of the law enforcement operation completely.
The U.S. Marshals Service took over the primary search for Gloria Vance. They tracked the silver sedan to a short-term rental motel three miles outside the city limit, but by the time law enforcement breached the room at 2:00 AM, Gloria was already gone.
However, she had left something behind in her rush to escape: a small notebook containing hand-written addresses, phone numbers, and daily schedules detailing my family’s entire routine.
She had been stalking us for over ten days.
The realization sent a chill through my soul, but it also gave us an unexpected advantage.
The following morning, Deputy Marshal Sarah Ross sat at our kitchen table alongside ADA Marcus Vance.
"Mrs. Miller," Deputy Marshal Ross explained, spreading a map of the city across the table. "Gloria Vance is running out of options and financial resources. Her bank accounts are frozen, her husband is locked up without bail, and her legal team has officially abandoned her case due to non-payment and ethical violations."
"She's desperate," Adam noted.
"Precisely," Ross agreed. "Desperate people make mistakes. But they are also extremely dangerous. She is fixated on re-establishing control over Lizzy because in her warped mind, regaining custody is the only way to validate her innocence and defeat the charges against her."
"So how do we catch her before she tries something worse?" I asked firmly.
Deputy Marshal Ross looked at me intently. "We give her an opportunity she thinks she created herself. We lay a trap."
Ross laid out the strategy: my mother had been monitoring my public social media accounts through burner profiles. The Marshals proposed making a subtle, public post announcing that Adam and I were taking Noah and Lizzy to a private family picnic at a specific, secluded botanical garden park on the north side of town the following afternoon.
The location was a controlled environment with only one entrance and exit, fully monitored by undercover Marshals positioned as park visitors, groundkeepers, and pedestrians.
"You want us to use ourselves as bait?" Adam asked, his jaw clenching with protective instinct.
"You and your husband will be surrounded by twelve armed federal marshals in plain clothes at all times," Ross assured us. "And Lizzy will not be at the park."
I looked up, surprised. "What do you mean?"
"An undercover female officer with a similar build and hair color wearing Lizzy's jacket and hat will be sitting beside you on the picnic blanket from a distance," Ross explained. "Gloria will see what she wants to see through her camera lens. The second she steps onto the property to approach, we close the net."

I looked at Adam. His eyes reflected the same intense, burning desire to end this nightmare once and for all.
"Do it," I said without a single second of hesitation. "Set the trap."
