Chapter 6 - The Custody Battle

The morning sun did not bring peace; it brought a formal legal summons.

By 9:00 a.m., I was sitting in the back office of a secure legal clinic in downtown Hartford, alongside Ethan and Detective Marcus Vance. The steel lockbox sat open on the table between us. Inside was the Holy Grail: Thomas’s original ledger, filled with meticulous annotations, bank codes, and five separate authorization letters bearing my father’s unmistakable signature and corporate seal.

But before Marcus could present the evidence to a federal prosecutor, a local sheriff entered the room, accompanied by two representatives from the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.

They handed me an emergency court order.

“Rachel Morgan,” the sheriff said formally. “Pursuant to an emergency order issued by Judge Walter Vance—no relation—of the Greenwich Family Court, your daughter, Lily Morgan, is to be remanded into the temporary custody of her grandparents pending a full psychiatric evaluation. You are ordered to surrender her location immediately.”

I stood up, the chair scraping sharply against the floor. “This is a retaliatory strike! My family is under investigation for corporate fraud and attempted murder!”

“We only execute the orders of the court, ma’am,” the representative said coldly. “The petition contains affidavits from three independent medical professionals stating the child is at risk of severe emotional harm while under your care, given your current flight status.”

Julian Vance, the senior partner of the firm and Ethan’s cousin, walked into the room, his expression grave. He looked at the documents, then at the sheriff.

“The order gives her until 2:00 p.m. this afternoon to appear at the family courthouse in Greenwich for an emergency hearing,” Julian said, his voice calm and authoritative. “If she appears, the child remains in her physical custody until the judge hears both sides. Am I correct?”

“Yes, counselor,” the representative admitted. “But if she fails to appear, a federal warrant will be issued for parental abduction.”

After they left the room, I looked at Julian in despair. “It’s a trap. If I walk into that courthouse in Greenwich, my father controls the territory. He’ll have me detained on psychological grounds before I can even present Thomas’s evidence.”

“Then we don't present the financial evidence to the family judge,” Julian said, a sharp, calculating smile touching his lips. “The family court has no jurisdiction over federal criminal matters. Marcus, how long until the US Attorney’s office can verify these signatures and issue a federal arrest warrant based on the ledger?”

“Three hours,” Marcus said, checking his watch. “We can have the warrant signed by a federal magistrate by 1:30 p.m.”

“Good,” Julian said, turning to me. “Rachel, you will walk into that family court at precisely 1:45 p.m. You will walk in alone, leaving Lily here with Ethan under armed guard. You will face your parents in front of that judge. You just need to hold the line for fifteen minutes. Can you do that?”

I looked at the silver butterfly necklace resting on the table beside the ledger. I thought of Lily’s burned arm, of Thomas’s final words on the audio file.

“I’ll hold it for as long as it takes,” I said.
