Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

At exactly 2:02 p.m., the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom flew open with a loud thud.

It wasn't a lone clerk or a reporter. It was a team of six federal agents dressed in dark blue tactical vests labeled FBI, led by Detective Marcus Vance and a senior US Attorney.

The courtroom went entirely silent as the agents marched down the center aisle, their boots echoing sharply off the marble floor. The judge stood up from his bench, his face filled with shock.

“What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Judge Vance demanded.

The US Attorney stepped forward, producing a certified red-stamped document. “Judge Vance, we are executing a federal arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. Richard Morgan and Eleanor Morgan are hereby taken into custody for federal racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and corporate money laundering.”

The gallery erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters rushed toward the railing, their cameras flashing as they bypassed the court’s media restrictions.

My mother let out a sharp, aristocratic gasp as a female federal agent stepped behind her, gently but firmly pulling her hands behind her back to secure them in steel handcuffs.

“Richard! Do something!” Eleanor cried, her perfect facade completely shattering as her pearl necklace caught on her collar.

But Richard Morgan did not move. He stood behind the table, his arms hanging loosely at his sides, his eyes fixed on the thick blue folder Detective Marcus Vance held in his hands—the ledger recovered from the burnt ruins of the shed.

“The ledger,” my father whispered, his voice suddenly sounding frail, the voice of an old man who had finally run out of moves. “Thomas really did keep it.”

“He kept it to protect his family from you, Richard,” Marcus said, stepping forward to read him his rights. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you.”

As the agents led my parents down the center aisle in handcuffs, my father stopped beside my table. He looked at me, a mixture of profound bitterness and a strange, twisted respect in his eyes.

“You’re a true Morgan, Rachel,” he whispered. “You don't back down from a fight.”

“No, Father,” I said, looking him dead in the eyes as the agent nudged him forward. “I’m a Morgan who survived you. And today, the name belongs to Lily.”

The lead attorney for the Morgan family sat down slowly at his table, closing his leather briefcase with a quiet click. He looked at Julian, then at me, and sighed.

“The custody petition is officially withdrawn, Your Honor,” the attorney muttered.

Judge Vance struck his gavel one final time, the sound echoing like a closing chapter. “Case dismissed. This court is adjourned.”

I sank back into my chair, the tears finally flowing freely down my cheeks. Julian placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, giving me a warm, triumphant smile.

“It’s over, Rachel,” Julian said softly. “They can never touch you or Lily again.”
