Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

"Crime?" Derek laughed nervously, walking over to stand next to our father. "You’ve lost your mind, Victoria. Post-partum depression must be getting to you. Father, call security! Get them out!"

None of the guards moved. Two of Alistair’s private security detail stood outside the glass doors, holding the room in total lock-down.

"Security isn't going to help you today, Derek," I said calmly. I gestured to Arthur Vance, who stepped forward and plugged a small flash drive into the central conference system.

The giant digital screens at the end of the boardroom flickered to life.

Spreadsheets, banking routings, and offshore account numbers flashed across the screens in high definition. The emblem of the Cayman Islands National Bank was clearly visible at the top of the main document.

My mother stood up so fast her chair slid back with a loud screech. "What is that? Turn that off!"

"That," I said, pointing to the screen, "is the ledger of Apex Holdings—a shell company registered under Derek Mercer's name. Over the last eighteen months, forty-two million dollars were systematically funneled out of the Mercer Industrial Employee Pension Fund directly into Apex Holdings."

The board members gasped. Marcus Vance and Eleanor Wright, the two independent directors, leaned forward, their eyes wide with horror as they scanned the transaction dates.

"This is insane!" Derek yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. "It's fake! She forged it! Alistair Sanders used his tech company to create fake documents!"

"Every document on that screen has been authenticated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Division," Alistair’s deep voice boomed, cutting Derek down instantly. "Arthur delivered a duplicate copy to the US Attorney's office forty-five minutes ago."

The room plunged into absolute chaos.

"The US Attorney?" my father stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. He turned to Derek, grabbing him by the lapels of his suit. "Derek! What did you do? You told me that money was a legal bridge loan from an offshore group!"

"He lied to you, Richard," I said, showing no mercy. "Just like you lied to yourself. You were so desperate to save your failing reputation and fund Derek’s extravagant lifestyle that you turned a blind eye while your son robbed two thousand hard-working people."

My mother rushed to my side of the table, her hands clutching the back of a chair. Tears of pure panic were finally streaming down her face, ruining her meticulous makeup.

"Victoria... please!" she begged, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "We are your family! Your own mother! If this goes public, your brother will go to prison! Your father will be disgraced! Think about what people will say about the Mercer name!"

I looked at my mother. I saw the same severe expression, the same pearl earrings, but the power she had held over me my entire life was completely gone.

"When I was laying in that hospital bed, six hours after delivering your grandson," I said, my voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage, "you didn't ask if I was alive. You called my child fatherless. You called him defective. You tried to force me to sign away my rights so you could cover up this exact crime."

"We were stressed!" my mother wept. "We didn't mean it!"

"You meant every word," I said coldly. "You don't care about family, Evelyn. You care about control. And today, you have lost all of it."

I turned my focus back to the board members.

"Mercer Industrial is currently facing immediate bankruptcy due to the forty-two million dollar pension deficit," I announced firmly. "In forty-eight hours, the SEC will freeze all company assets. The stock will plummet to zero."

"We're ruined..." one of the senior board members groaned, putting his head in his hands. "We're all ruined."

"Not quite," I said.

I pulled a crisp legal document from my briefcase and placed it on the table.

"I am making an official tender offer," I declared. "Sanders Global Capital, in partnership with my personal investment firm, will purchase one hundred percent of Mercer Industrial outstanding shares at current market value. We will immediately inject fifty million dollars to fully restore the employee pension fund, settle all outstanding vendor debts, and keep the manufacturing division operating at full capacity."

My father stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "You... you want to buy the company?"

"I am buying the company," I corrected him. "Under one condition."

"What condition?" Eleanor Wright asked eagerly.

"The immediate, unconditional resignation of Richard Mercer, Evelyn Mercer, and Derek Mercer from the board of directors," I said, looking my father dead in the eye. "You will surrender all voting rights, vacate your offices by noon today, and sign a lifetime non-disclosure and non-compete agreement."

"And if we refuse?" Derek spat, his eyes wild with rage.

Alistair stepped forward, resting both hands on the back of my chair. "If you refuse, Derek, federal agents are waiting in the lobby downstairs to arrest you for grand larceny, wire fraud, and pension embezzlement. You can sign the surrender documents here, or you can sign your bail paperwork at the federal courthouse."

Silence descended on the room like a heavy shroud.

My father looked at the screens showing his son's crimes, then at the board members who were all staring at him with cold disgust, and finally at me. He looked smaller, older, and utterly defeated. The grand titan of Mercer Industrial had been reduced to nothing.

With shaking hands, my father reached into his pocket, pulled out his montblanc pen—the same pen he had tried to force on me in the hospital room—and pulled the surrender document toward him.

"Richard, no!" my mother shrieked.

"Shut up, Evelyn!" my father snapped, his voice broken. "It's over! Don't you see? It's over!"

He signed his name on the dotted line. He slid the pen to Derek, who was sobbing silently as he too added his signature.

I took the signed documents and handed them to Arthur Vance.

"Effective immediately," I announced to the remaining board members, "I am assuming the role of Interim CEO and Chairwoman of Mercer Industrial. Meeting adjourned."
