Chapter 7 - The Grand Debut

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was transformed into a breathtaking sanctuary of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and soft golden candlelight.
The annual Sanders Global Gala was the most exclusive event on the global social calendar. Ambassadors, royalty, tech billionaires, and international heads of state gathered under the gilded ceiling, sipping vintage champagne and discussing global finance.
Tonight, however, the air was electric with anticipation for a completely different reason. It was the first public appearance of Victoria Mercer-Sanders as Chairwoman of Mercer Industrial and the official presentation of the infant heir to the Sanders empire.
I stood in the private holding suite upstairs, looking at myself in the full-length mirror.
I wore an emerald green silk gown designed by Elie Saab, which draped elegantly over my body, accentuating my figure. Around my neck rested the historic Sanders Emerald—a forty-carat flawless gemstone that had been passed down through three generations of Sanders women.
Alistair stepped up behind me, wearing a perfectly fitted midnight-blue tuxedo. He looked impossibly handsome. He gently wrapped his hands around my waist, looking at our reflection in the mirror.
"You are the most breathtaking woman in this or any other room," he whispered against my ear, making a blush rise to my cheeks.
"You're not so bad yourself, Mr. Sanders," I smirked, turning in his arms to fix his bow tie. "How is our guest of honor?"
Alistair pointed toward the velvet sofa, where Kirk was happily lying on his back, dressed in a custom mini tuxedo onesie, kicking his little feet in the air while our nanny held a silver rattle.
"He's completely unbothered by the fact that he's about to meet thirty billionaires," Alistair chuckled softly.
A soft knock came at the door. Arthur Vance walked in, looking sharp in his tuxedo.
"It's time, Alistair, Victoria," Arthur said. "The media line is set up, and the guests are seated in the main hall."
I took a deep breath, picking up baby Kirk and holding him snugly against my chest. Alistair offered me his arm, and together, we walked out of the suite toward the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom.
As we stepped onto the balcony landing, the grand orchestral music softened. The chatter of five hundred elite guests suddenly vanished into total, awe-struck silence.
The spotlight swung up, illuminating the three of us.
Alistair took the microphone mounted on the balcony rail. His voice echoed through the magnificent hall with absolute command and pride.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Alistair announced, his hazel eyes scanning the grand room. "Tonight, we celebrate progress, resilience, and legacy. Many of you have read the news over the past few weeks. You have seen rumors, scandals, and dramatic shifts in the market. But tonight, I want to set the record straight."
Alistair reached over, resting his hand gently on my back.
"This is my wife, Victoria Mercer-Sanders—the Chairwoman of Mercer Industrial, a brilliant leader, and the love of my life. And this..." Alistair looked down at the tiny baby in my arms, his voice softening with pure pride, "...is our son, Kirk Sanders. The future of everything we build."
The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause. Billionaires, diplomats, and socialites stood up, cheering and clapping. Cameras flashed from the press gallery like a storm of lightning bolts.
I looked out over the crowd, feeling an incredible surge of power and peace.
Among the sea of cheering faces, I noticed a few prominent high-society figures who had previously shunned me when my mother was spreading rumors about my pregnancy. Now, they were clapping frantically, desperate to catch my eye, desperate for an invitation to our circle.

I didn't care about their shallow approval. I looked at Alistair, who was smiling at me with pure devotion, and down at Kirk, who was yawning sleepily against my chest.
We were untouchable.
