Chapter 6 - THE MAYFAIR AMBUSH

Forty-eight hours later, rain was pouring over the cobblestone streets of Mayfair, London.
The sky was a heavy, bruised slate gray, perfectly matching the imposing, neoclassical granite facade of Bank von Berg & Cie—one of the oldest, most exclusive private Swiss banking institutions in Europe.
Inside the bank’s private fifth-floor executive board chamber, a massive oak table was set with crystal carafes, silver coffee services, and stacks of legal documents stamped with red wax seals.
Astrid Beaumont sat at the head of the table.
She wore a tailored black wool suit from a high-end French designer, her blonde hair swept into an elegant chignon, her face painted with subtle, expensive makeup that gave her the look of a grieving, noble young mother. Sitting beside her was Charles Vance, who had flown in secretly from New York on a private charter twenty-four hours earlier.
Across from them sat Herr Wilhelm Berg, the senior Swiss managing director of the bank, alongside three international estate attorneys.
“The electronic verification from the Zurich repository is complete, Miss Beaumont,” Herr Berg said, reviewing a glowing tablet screen. “The genetic sequence of the infant matches the preserved sample of the late Julian Roth. Under the terms of the 1974 Dynasty Trust bylaws, upon physical presentation of the child and verification of maternal guardianship, the initial release of two point eight billion dollars will be transferred to your designated holding account in Liechtenstein.”
Astrid pressed a lace handkerchief to her eyes, forcing a delicate, tragic tear to spill down her cheek. “Thank you, Herr Berg. It has been a horrifying ordeal. My sister... my poor, disturbed sister Elsie... abducted my sweet boy from my home in Scottsdale. The police in America are still searching for his body after her tragic accident in Mexico.”
“A tragic loss indeed,” Charles Vance chimed in smoothly, patting Astrid’s shoulder with paternal affection. “Fortunately, Miss Beaumont has demonstrated extraordinary resilience. We are ready to execute the final signature protocols on behalf of the child’s estate.”
Herr Berg nodded, sliding a thick silver pen across the polished oak table toward Astrid. “Sign section four, Miss Beaumont. Once your signature is recorded, the trust assets will be permanently unsealed.”
Astrid reached out her manicured hand, her fingers closing around the heavy silver pen. A cold, victorious smirk flashed across her eyes for a split second—the smirk of a woman who was three seconds away from becoming one of the wealthiest individuals on earth.
BOOM!
The heavy double doors of the executive board chamber were thrown open with such violent force that the brass handles slammed against the marble walls, echoing like a cannon shot.
Astrid froze, the pen hovering an inch above the paper.
Six armed Metropolitan Police officers dressed in high-visibility tactical vests stepped into the room, securing the perimeter.
Stepping through the doorway right behind them was Dennis Roth, looking imposing and magnificent in a midnight-blue coat, his icy gray eyes locking onto Charles Vance with lethal intensity.
Beside Dennis walked a senior inspector from Interpol, holding an official international arrest warrant.
And walking right between them, holding a sleeping newborn baby wrapped in a soft cream cashmere blanket, was me.
I wore an elegant emerald-green coat, my auburn hair falling in sleek waves over my shoulders, my posture straight, proud, and completely unshakeable.
Astrid dropped the silver pen. It rolled across the polished mahogany table and fell onto the carpet with a soft, pathetic thud.
Her face went completely, utterly white. Her mouth worked silently for three seconds, her eyes bulging in sheer, unadulterated horror.
“E... Elsie?!” Astrid gasped, her voice shrinking into a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. “You... you’re dead! You died in Mexico!”
I stepped into the center of the room, stopping directly opposite her at the long table. I looked my sister dead in the eye, my voice ringing clear, cold, and razor-sharp through the silent chamber.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you, Astrid,” I said, a dark, victorious smile touching my lips. “But reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!” Charles Vance roared, jumping up from his chair, his face flushing dark red. “This woman is a wanted fugitive in the United States! Officers, arrest her immediately! She kidnapped that child!”
“Sit down, Mr. Vance!” Inspector Dupont of Interpol commanded, stepping forward and slamming a thick blue dossier onto the table. “Charles Vance, you are under arrest pursuant to an international warrant issued by the High Court of London for forgery, conspiracy to commit fraud, and illegal access of biological repositories!”
Two tactical officers moved in instantly, grabbing Vance by his arms and forcing his hands behind his back.
“This is absurd!” Vance screamed, thrashing against the officers. “I am a managing partner of a global law firm! You can’t touch me!”
“We can, and we have,” Dennis said calmly, stepping up beside me. He looked down at Herr Berg, who was staring at the scene in absolute shock. “Herr Berg, I am Dennis Roth, CEO of Roth Capital Group and executor of the Roth Family Dynasty Trust. The woman sitting at your table is not a grieving mother. She is an international fraudster who used a forged Swiss court order to steal my deceased brother’s genetic material.”
Herr Berg gasped, standing up so fast his chair rolled backward. “Forged Swiss documents?!”
“Here is the certified audit from the Zurich Cryogenic Clinic,” Dennis said, sliding a tablet across the table. “Signed three hours ago by the Chief Prosecutor of Zurich. The authorization carried my father’s forged signature—engineered by Charles Vance.”
Astrid backed away from the table, her hands shaking violently, her regal, elegant composure completely disintegrating into panic. “No... no! It’s not true! I loved Julian! I had a secret relationship with him before he died!”
I stepped closer to her, holding the baby so she could see his peaceful face.
“You never met Julian, Astrid,” I said, my voice cutting through her lies like a diamond blade. “You didn't even know his name until you found his personnel file in the archives during your summer internship. You targeted a dead man’s trust because you thought dead men couldn't fight back.”
“Elsie... please!” Astrid suddenly cried, dropping to her knees on the carpet, reaching out to grab the hem of my coat, tears of pure terror pouring down her cheeks. “I’m your sister! We’re blood! Mom and Dad made me do it! They wanted the money! It was Mom’s idea to frame you!”
I looked down at my sister kneeling at my feet. The golden child, the perfect daughter who had spent her entire life walking on my dreams, was now reduced to a begging, weeping mess on a Swiss bank’s floor.
I slowly pulled the hem of my coat out of her grasp.
“You’re wrong, Astrid,” I said softly, looking down at her with a mix of pity and profound disgust. “Mom didn't make you do anything. You built this cage all by yourself. And today, the door locks.”
Inspector Dupont stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Astrid Beaumont, you are under arrest for grand larceny, international conspiracy, and filing false criminal reports.”
As the steel cuffs clicked around Astrid’s wrists, she began to scream and thrash, her glamorous facade completely gone, revealing the hollow, desperate monster underneath.
As they dragged my sister and Charles Vance out of the executive chamber, Herr Berg wiped cold sweat from his forehead and looked at Dennis.
“Mr. Roth... this is an unprecedented disaster,” Herr Berg stuttered. “What happens to the child? What happens to the Dynasty Trust?”
Dennis looked down at me, his gray eyes softening into a warmth so intense it made my heart leap in my chest.
May you like
He reached out, his long fingers wrapping gently around mine as we held the baby together.
“The trust remains exactly where it belongs,” Dennis declared softly. “Under the protection of the people who actually care about this child.”
