Chapter 7 - THE CLEAN BREAK

Six months passed.

The wounds on my body slowly healed, leaving behind only small, light scars that served as permanent reminders of my resilience. Through intensive physical therapy, my leg regained its strength, allowing me to discard the cane entirely. I could walk freely, proudly, and without pain.

The grand suburban mansion was sold for $8.5 million.

I didn't keep a single dollar of the proceeds for personal luxury. Instead, working alongside Thomas Sterling, I used the capital from the estate to found The Evelyn Vance Foundation for Victims of Domestic Abuse—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe housing, legal representation, and medical care for abused women and children.

One morning, while working in my new office at the foundation’s bright, glass-walled headquarters downtown, my assistant informed me that I had a visitor.

It was my brother, Mark.

He walked into the office hesitantly. He wore a simple uniform from a local auto repair shop where he had recently taken a job as a junior mechanic. He looked thinner, humbled, but for the first time in his life, he looked like a real adult who was working for his own living.

"Clara," Mark said softly, standing near the door. "Thank you for seeing me."

"Sit down, Mark," I said gently, gesturing to the armchair across from my desk.

He sat down, placing his calloused hands on his knees.

"I came to tell you..." Mark swallowed hard. "Rachel and I are getting a divorce. The stress... the realization of what we became... it completely broke us. She couldn't handle living a normal life without money and status. She moved back to her parents' house in Ohio."

I listened quietly, offering no judgment.

"I’m living in a small one-bedroom apartment near the shop," Mark continued, his voice thick with emotion. "I’m working sixty hours a week to pay off my personal debts. And... I just wanted to thank you."

I raised an eyebrow. "Thank me?"

"For setting up Liam’s school trust," Mark said, tears welling in his eyes. "He’s doing really well in his new class. He’s happy. And... thank you for stopping Dad. If you hadn't brought down his empire, I would have spent my whole life being his spineless errand boy. You were the strongest person in our family, Clara. I was just too blind and cowardly to see it."

I looked at my brother for a long moment. The anger that had burned inside me for months finally softened into a quiet, peaceful closure.

"I accept your apology, Mark," I said honestly. "I hope you build a better life for yourself and for Liam. But we can never go back to being the family we were."

"I understand," Mark nodded, wiping a tear from his eye. He stood up, gave me a long, respectful look, and walked out the door, ending the final toxic chapter of my past.
