Chapter 10 - A New Chapter

One year after my graduation.

The sun was warm over the outdoor terrace of a lovely restaurant in downtown Columbus. The table was decorated with fresh flowers, white linen, and glowing candles.

Around the table sat people who truly loved and respected me: Clara, who was now my fiancée; Ethan, who had finished his associate degree with honors thanks to the mentorship I provided him; and a few of my closest colleagues from the law firm.

At the far end of the terrace, my parents sat quietly. They had arrived on time, dressed modestly, and acted with absolute respect. Melissa was not there—she was still working through her own journey of accountability, though Tyler had sent a sincere, handwritten apology letter two months earlier, acknowledging his mistake and asking for forgiveness.

The waiter walked out carrying a large, beautiful chocolate cake with glowing candles, marking my first full year as an attorney and my recent promotion to senior associate.

The table clapped.

Ethan looked at me with a smirk. "Hey, David... nobody’s allowed to knock this one over."

The whole table laughed—a genuine, warm, loving laughter shared with me, not at me.

I looked at Clara, who took my hand under the table, squeezing it gently. Then I looked at my parents, who were smiling softly, eyes filled with quiet respect and pride.

I blew out the candles.

I had spent my entire life trying to keep my family from hitting the ground, only to realize that sometimes, things need to fall apart so that something real can be built in their place.

I cut the first slice of cake, served it onto a clean porcelain plate, and took a bite.

It tasted like freedom.
