Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Melissa

A month later, the reality of her new life fully set in for Melissa. Without her SUV, without her parents' house to use as a free daycare, and with her marriage dissolved, she was forced to move into a tiny two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city.

Tyler, used to getting whatever he wanted without consequence, did not adapt well to their new lifestyle.

One afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number. It was the vice-principal of Tyler’s middle school.

"Mr. David Vance?" the voice asked.

"Yes, speaking."

"Mr. Vance, we have your nephew, Tyler Vance, in the administrative office. He was involved in a severe bullying incident today. He threw another student’s lunch on the cafeteria floor and told him to 'eat it off the dirt.'"

I felt a chill run down my spine.

"Why are you calling me?" I asked coldly.

"Your sister, Melissa, gave us your number as an emergency financial guarantor for school fee damages. Tyler destroyed school property—a projector in the principal's office—during his outburst after being reprimanded."

I rubbed my temples. Melissa had actually listed me on his school emergency form without my knowledge, hoping my name would bail her out again.

"Listen to me carefully," I said, my voice cutting like ice. "I am not Tyler’s guardian, nor am I a financial guarantor for his actions. My sister listed me illegally without my consent. If you attempt to bill me or contact me regarding this matter again, I will file a formal harassment complaint and civil action against the school district."

"I... I see," the principal stammered. "We will contact Mrs. Vance immediately."

"Do that," I said. "And tell her that actions have consequences—for her and her son."

That evening, I learned through Ethan that Tyler had been suspended for two weeks and ordered to undergo mandatory behavioral counseling. Melissa was ordered to pay $2,500 in property damages to the school—money she had to take out a high-interest payday loan to cover.

The rotten foundation of toxic entitlement that my parents had built around Melissa and Tyler was crumbling, stone by stone.
