Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Marina

The rain fell in heavy, gray sheets over the Gulf Coast as police cars surrounded the docks at the Padre Island Marina in Corpus Christi, three hours south of San Antonio.
I had insisted on riding along in Detective Chen's unmarked unit, refusing to stay behind at the hospital while David remained with Ethan and his parents.
Through the rain-streaked windshield, I watched the rows of white luxury yachts rocking against the choppy water.
"US Coast Guard and Texas Rangers have locked down the perimeter," Chen said, adjusting his tactical vest and pulling his service weapon from his holster. "We located the vessel she chartered under a fake name—a thirty-five-foot sailboat called The Sea Breeze."
"Is she on board?" I asked, my breathing shallow.
"Thermal imaging from our drone shows a single occupant inside the main cabin," Chen confirmed. "Stay in the car, Rachel. That's an order."
"She tried to murder my son, Detective," I said, staring at the dock. "I'm not going anywhere."
A team of six heavily armed Texas Rangers moved quietly down the wooden pier, their boots making light splashing sounds against the wet planks. They positioned themselves around the sailboat, weapons raised.
"Jennifer Walsh! This is the Texas Rangers!" an officer shouted through a bullhorn over the sound of the howling wind. "Step out onto the deck with your hands above your head! The marina is surrounded!"
For ten agonizing seconds, nothing happened.
Then, the cabin door of the sailboat creaked open.
Jennifer stepped out onto the deck.
She wore a bright red rain jacket, dark jeans, and leather boots. She was clutching a large leather handbag against her chest like a shield. Her hair was soaked, sticking to her pale, wild-eyed face.
She looked nothing like the polished, elegant aunt who brought fancy cupcakes to Sunday dinners. She looked like a cornered animal.
"I didn't do anything wrong!" Jennifer screamed into the wind, her voice shrill and unhinged. "It was an accident! The bakery made a mistake!"
Detective Chen stepped out of the cruiser and walked onto the pier, holding up his radio. "We have the forensic reports, Jennifer! We found the syringe needle cap under Ethan's bed! We have the notary's confession! And we have the life insurance policy you forged in Rachel's name!"
Jennifer’s eyes darted frantically around the pier, taking in the dozen armed officers pointing weapons at her.
Then, her eyes caught mine sitting inside the police cruiser.
Her expression twisted from terror into pure, toxic spite.
"He was just a kid, Rachel!" Jennifer screamed across the water, her voice echoing over the waves. "You had everything! A perfect family! A handsome husband! A beautiful house! And what did I have?! Nothing! My husband left me! I was broke! Why should Ethan get everything while I starve?!"
I opened the car door and stepped out into the pouring rain, walking straight to the edge of the pier beside Detective Chen.
"He loved you, Jennifer," I shouted back, tears mixing with the cold rain on my face. "He called you his favorite aunt! He had a picture of you on his bedroom nightstand!"
"He was worth seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars!" Jennifer shrieked, taking a step closer to the boat railing. "He was my way out!"
"Drop the bag and get on your knees, Jennifer!" the Ranger captain ordered.
Instead of obeying, Jennifer reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, metallic object.
It was a second syringe, pre-filled with a clear liquid.
"If I'm going to prison, I'm taking your peace with me!" she screamed, plunging the needle toward her own neck in a desperate attempt to commit suicide before she could be arrested.
"TASER! TASER! TASER!" shouted a Ranger.

A sharp crack echoed through the air. Two electrified wires flew through the storm, striking Jennifer directly in the torso.
Her entire body locked up instantly. The syringe flew out of her hand, splashing harmlessly into the ocean below, and she collapsed hard onto the wooden deck of the boat, gasping for air as officers swarmed over the railing and clamped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
