Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Vance Bio-Tech

By 8:00 PM, the rain outside had turned into a torrential downpour. Thunder rattled the floorbeams of the mansion, but inside, the atmosphere had transformed into a command center.
Arthur Pendelton arrived in an unmarked black van accompanied by Dr. Marcus Thorne, a world-renowned forensic toxicologist who had worked with my father for two decades.
Dr. Thorne sat at the dining room table under the bright chandelier, wearing blue nitrile gloves as he carefully emptied three of the white capsules into a portable mass spectrometer.
Owen sat on a high chair beside Whitney, drinking warm milk while Arthur’s men swept the house, disabling every hidden camera and microphone David had secretly installed over the past six months.
"It’s ingenious... and utterly terrifying," Dr. Thorne breathed ten minutes later, staring at the digital readout on his screen.
I stepped closer to the table. "What is in those pills, Marcus?"
"It’s a synthetic derivative of tetrodotoxin combined with a delayed-release central nervous system depressant," Dr. Thorne explained, pointing to the chemical structure displayed on his monitor. "In small doses, it doesn't kill. It paralyzes the vocal cords, causes severe disorientation, loss of short-term memory, and triggers acute auditory hallucinations."
"He was trying to make me appear insane," I whispered.
"More than that," Dr. Thorne said darkly. "If you had taken these for five consecutive days, the cumulative buildup would have caused an apparent stroke. You would have been completely conscious, locked inside your own body, unable to speak or move, while your doctors signed paperwork declaring you in a vegetative state."
A icy shudder ran down my spine. Locked inside my own body. That was the fate David had crafted for me.
Arthur stepped into the dining room, holding a encrypted satellite tablet.
"Miss Vance," Arthur said. "We just intercepted a flurry of encrypted emails from the Lake Forest estate. David has forged your signature on a power of attorney document. He’s planning to present it to your board of directors tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM at the downtown headquarters."
"Who is supporting him on the board?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
"Vice President Marcus Sterling and CFO Eleanor Vance—your father’s cousin," Arthur revealed. "They’ve been promised fifteen percent of the Swiss liquidation deal once you are removed from the picture."
"Eleanor..." I let out a dry, bitter laugh. "My own blood."
"They believe you are currently incapacitated in this house," Arthur continued. "David has instructed his mother, Maggie, to return here at midnight tonight with Dr. Keller. They intend to administer a heavy IV injection to 'stabilize' you before calling an ambulance to take you to Keller’s private clinic."
"So they are coming back tonight," I said.
"Yes," Arthur said, his gray eyes glinting with a lethal intensity. "We can arrest them at the gate, Miss Vance. My men have enough legal authority under corporate security protocols to detain them immediately."
"No," I said, stepping toward the window and looking out into the storm. "If you arrest them at the gate, their high-priced lawyers will claim it was a domestic misunderstanding. They’ll scrub the Zurich accounts, blame Keller, and walk away on bail."

I turned back to face Arthur, Dr. Thorne, and my son.
"I want them inside this house," I said. "I want David, Maggie, and Dr. Keller to walk into this living room believing their poison worked. I want them to confess on camera in front of my father’s lawyers. And then I am going to tear their lives apart, piece by piece."
