Chapter 2 - The Morning After

Christmas morning arrived in silence. The snow had stopped, leaving a crisp white blanket over the Ohio valley.

At 7:00 AM, my phone began vibrating continuously on the hotel nightstand. Sixteen missed calls from Claire. Four text messages from Brandon.

I ignored Brandon's messages entirely, but opened Claire’s latest text:

Mom, please come home. Brandon says you're trying to ruin Christmas for the kids. Donna was just trying to feel included. We can talk about this like adults.

I sat up in bed, wrapped in a plush hotel robe, and called my attorney, Marcus Sterling. Marcus had handled Arthur's estate and managed the legal trusts we created for the property decades ago.

"Margaret?" Marcus answered on the second ring, his voice crisp despite the holiday. "Merry Christmas. Is everything alright? You don't usually call me before eight on a holiday."

"Marcus," I said calmly. "Who currently holds the legal deed to the Mercer Estate, including the primary house and the secondary guesthouse?"

"You do, Margaret. One hundred percent. It’s held under the Arthur & Margaret Mercer Revocable Living Trust, of which you are the sole trustee."

"And what is the legal status of Brandon and Donna Whitaker’s presence on that property?"

A brief pause echoed on the line as Marcus caught the shift in my tone. "They are unleased guests, Margaret. They have no tenancy agreement, no equity stake, and no legal right to occupy the premises if you revoke permission."

"Then I want you to draft a formal thirty-day notice to vacate for Donna Whitaker regarding the main house, and a formal lease termination for Brandon and Claire regarding the guesthouse."

"Margaret," Marcus said carefully. "Are you sure? Once we file these documents, there’s no sweeping it back under the rug. Claire is involved."

"Claire is being erased inside her own life, Marcus," I said, looking out at the snow-covered pines outside my hotel window. "I let Brandon push me out of my chair last night because I needed to see how far he would go. If I don't take my house back today, Claire won't have a mother or a home left by next year."

"Consider it done," Marcus said. "I'll have process servers at the property by ten o'clock tomorrow morning."
