Chapter 3 - The Return to the Gates

At noon on Boxing Day, I drove my sedan back up the winding gravel driveway of the Mercer Estate.

As I approached the house, I noticed three luxury vehicles parked in the circular turnaround that didn't belong to my daughter or son-in-law. Brandon’s brother, his wife, and two local real estate developers from the county board were standing on my front porch, holding coffee mugs that belonged to my kitchen.

Brandon was standing among them, holding a roll of architectural blueprints open against the stone pillar of my porch.

I parked behind Brandon’s truck, stepped out of the car, and walked up the front steps.

The laughter on the porch died down immediately. Donna, sitting on a teak rocking chair wrapped in my wool throw blanket, set her mug down with a tight, artificial smile.

"Margaret!" Donna called out, her voice dripping with patronizing concern. "We were so worried about you! Running off like that on Christmas evening... Brandon told everyone you were feeling a bit overwhelmed with your memory lately."

I stopped at the top step, looking Donna up and down. "My memory is perfectly clear, Donna. Clear enough to remember that this porch belongs to me."

Brandon stepped forward, rolling up his blueprints with an annoyed huff. "Margaret, can we not do this in front of guests? This is Greg and Sam from Sterling Development. We were just discussing the layout of the west lot."

"The west lot?" I asked, turning my eyes to Brandon. "The timber lot where Arthur and I planted red oaks thirty years ago?"

"It's dead land, Margaret," Brandon said, lowering his voice into that smooth, condescending tone he used when he wanted to manipulate Claire. "I'm planning a six-unit luxury townhouse project. It’s going to revitalize the estate's value. I brought Greg over to review the preliminary zoning approval."

"Zoning approval?" I turned to Greg, the local developer, who was looking increasingly uncomfortable. "Greg, who submitted zoning applications for the Mercer Estate?"

Greg shifted his weight. "Uh, Brandon did, Mrs. Mercer. He presented himself as the estate manager acting on behalf of the family trust."

"He lied to you, Greg," I said flatly. "Brandon Whitaker has no power of attorney, no managerial authority, and zero equity in this property. Any zoning applications filed under his name are fraudulent."

Brandon’s face turned bright red, a vein pulsing at his temple. "Margaret! Step inside right now! You are embarrassing this family!"

"This isn't your family, Brandon," I said softly. "And this isn't your house."
