Chapter 5 - The Showdown at the Bank

On Friday morning, Brian received an emergency notification from the Maryland National Bank. His private checking account—the small one he used to hide his independent freelance earnings from Walter—had been placed under a temporary administrative freeze by court order.

Furious and desperate, Brian drove his leased Mercedes to the downtown Annapolis branch, with Melissa riding shotgun, her phone already dialing her lawyer.

When they stormed into the branch manager’s private office, they found Walter already sitting there, a cup of tea in his hand, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and a senior forensic investigator from the State Attorney's Financial Crimes Division.

"What is the meaning of this?" Brian yelled, slamming his car keys onto the manager's desk. "You froze my account! That’s my money! My father has nothing to do with that account!"

The investigator, a sharp-faced woman named Detective Reynolds, pulled a set of financial transcripts from her briefcase. "Mr. Bennett, your account was frozen because it received three distinct wire transfers of $8,500 each from a corporate account registered under the name Vance Consulting—which belongs to your girlfriend, Melissa Vance."

Melissa went rigid, her hand dropping from her phone. "That’s... that’s just business consulting fees. Brian helped me with my marketing."

"No, Ms. Vance," Detective Reynolds said coldly. "Those funds were directly traced back to the payroll account of Sutter Medical Logistics—the company Walter Bennett owns twenty percent of as a silent partner. You used your position as a temporary administrative clerk at the shipping firm to forge Walter's digital signature, authorizing 'consulting bonuses' to your own firm, which you then funneled to Brian to pay for his luxury car lease."

Brian looked at Melissa, his eyes wide with horror as he realized the depth of the trap they had walked into. "Melissa... you said the money was clean! You said you worked out an agreement with the payroll director!"

"She lied to you, Brian," Walter said, his voice quiet, full of a profound, heavy sorrow as he looked at his son. "Just like you lied to me. You thought I was an old man who didn't understand digital tokens or corporate routing. I designed the security architecture for that payroll system twenty years ago."

Walter slid a single piece of paper across the desk. "This is a criminal waiver, Brian. The state is prepared to file grand theft charges against both of you. However... I have requested a deferment. If you sign the unconditional surrender of the house deed claim and pack your things by sunset tonight, I will not press charges against you. Melissa, however, is going to have to speak with the detective."
