By the summer of 2027, Walter’s forensic accounting work regarding the Bayview Senior Haven conspiracy had drawn the attention of the State Attorney General’s Task Force on Elder Financial Exploitation.
At seventy-one, Walter was officially appointed as a senior consultant for the state, helping to design digital detection matrices to protect vulnerable seniors from the exact kind of predatory guardianship fraud that Melissa had attempted to perpetrate.
On a warm June afternoon, Walter stood in the grand ballroom of the Maryland State House, receiving a formal citation of public service from the governor. He wore his best charcoal suit, his silver hair catching the chandeliers’ light, his hands steady as he accepted the framed certificate.
In the back row of the gallery, sitting quietly beside Clara, was Brian.
He looked different now—thinner, his expensive linen shirts replaced by a simple, clean collared shirt from a local department store, his posture straight and respectful. He didn't cheer loudly; he simply clapped with a quiet, deep pride, his eyes locked onto his father with an expression that contained no malice, only an immense, profound respect.
After the ceremony, Walter walked through the crowded hallway, his colleagues offering their congratulations. He paused when he reached Brian, who stood near the heavy oak exit doors, holding a small paper bag.
"Congratulations, Dad," Brian said softly, lifting a hand to shake Walter’s.
Walter looked at his son’s hand—rough, calloused, the hand of a man who worked for his bread. Walter bypassed the handshake, pulling Brian into a brief, firm embrace. "Thank you for coming, Brian."

Walter looked into the bag, a beautiful, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. "Let’s go home, son. The sunset is going to be expensive tonight, and I don't want to miss it."
