Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Plano

By Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., Ryan Caldwell was feeling like a king.

The weekend in Austin had been fantastic. His meetings had gone well, Vanessa was thrilled with her new Lexus, and he had successfully convinced himself that Natalie would figure something out for Caleb. Women like Natalie always found a way—she’d borrow from her sister, set up a GoFundMe, or beg the hospital for charity. She was resilient like that.

He pulled his luxury SUV into the driveway of their two-story brick home in Plano, Texas.

He smoothed his tie, adjusted his leather jacket, and prepared his speech. He would walk inside, act exhausted, drop his suitcase near the stairs, and tell Natalie that he was working night and day to secure a promotion that would save their family.

He unlocked the front door and pushed it open.

The house was dark. The air was cool and dead silent.

"Nat?" Ryan called out, tossing his keys onto the entry table. "I'm home! Austin traffic was a nightmare."

No answer.

Ryan frowned. He walked into the kitchen. The granite countertops were completely bare. The refrigerator was empty, save for a single carton of milk and a bottle of water.

He walked into the family room. Caleb’s toys—the toy trucks, the legos, the drawing boards—were all gone.

"Natalie?" Ryan said, a sudden knot of irritation tightening in his stomach. "Where are you?"

He turned around to head upstairs, but stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing on the covered back patio, visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, were two uniformed Dallas County Sheriff's deputies. And standing in the middle of the foyer behind him was a quiet, sharp-looking man in a grey suit holding a thick manila folder.

"Ryan Caldwell?" the man in the suit asked calmly.

"Who the hell are you?" Ryan snapped, his executive arrogance flaring up instantly. "How did you get into my house? Deputies, what is going on here?!"

The process server stepped forward and handed the thick manila folder directly against Ryan’s chest.

"You've been served, Mr. Caldwell," the server said flatly. "In Re: The Marriage of Natalie Caldwell and Ryan Caldwell. Cause number 26-04812, Dallas County Family Court."

Ryan stared down at the documents, his heart dropping into his throat. "Divorce? Is this a joke? Natalie can't afford a divorce!"

"Read page three, sir," one of the Sheriff's deputies said, stepping into the hallway, his hand resting casually on his belt. "You are subject to an emergency ex-parte court order signed by Judge Patricia Sterling."

Ryan frantically flipped open the folder, his eyes scanning the formal legal text:

EMERGENCY ORDER OF INJUNCTION AND ASSET FREEZE IMMEDIATE GARNISHMENT OF CORPORATE ACCOUNTS: $50,000 EXCLUSIONARY WRIT: EXCLUSIVE POSSESSION GRANTED TO PETITIONER

"What?!" Ryan screamed, his face flushing crimson. "Freeze my accounts?! You can't freeze my accounts! I have mortgage payments! I have credit cards! Where is Natalie?!"

"Mrs. Caldwell is with her son at St. Catherine's Children's Hospital," the deputy replied coldly. "And you have fifteen minutes to pack one overnight bag of personal clothing, sir. Under paragraph four of this order, you are required to vacate these premises immediately."

"Vacate my house?!" Ryan yelled, stepping toward the deputy. "I paid for this house! This is my name on the mortgage!"

May you like

The deputy stepped forward, his tall frame looming over Ryan, his expression turning to stone.

"Touch me or step toward me again, Mr. Caldwell, and you will spend the night in Dallas County Jail for obstructing law enforcement," the deputy warned. "Fifteen minutes. Pack a bag. Now."
