Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa's Dream

Ryan stood on the sidewalk in front of his locked Plano home, holding a single leather duffel bag like a common vagrant.
His key cards didn't work on the smart lock—Natalie had changed the security codes remotely. His personal bank app showed a bright red warning banner: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED BY COURT ORDER. His corporate card was declined when he tried to order an Uber.
Hands shaking with rage, he called Vanessa.
It took six calls before she finally answered.
"Ryan?" Vanessa’s voice sounded irritated, loud pop music blasting in the background. "Where are you? You said we were going to dinner at Del Frisco’s tonight."
"Vanessa, listen to me," Ryan panted, walking toward the neighborhood gas station. "Natalie went insane. She got some corrupt judge to freeze my personal bank accounts. I need you to come pick me up in the Lexus. I'll stay at your apartment for a few days until my corporate lawyers sort this out."
A heavy silence fell over the line.
"Vanessa?" Ryan asked. "Did you hear me?"
"Ryan..." Vanessa’s voice dropped, the irritation replaced by sheer panic. "Where is the Lexus?"
Ryan stopped walking. "What do you mean, where is the Lexus? It's in your garage!"
"It was in my garage!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning high-pitched and hysterical. "Two tow trucks and three police officers just pulled up to my apartment complex ten minutes ago! They showed my landlord an impound order from a Dallas court! They hooked up the Lexus and towed it away, Ryan! They said the car was bought with stolen marital assets!"
"What?!" Ryan gasped, his head spinning out of control.
"They towed my car!" Vanessa screamed into the phone. "And the officers told my landlord that you used fraudulent corporate card transfers to pay for the lease! My landlord is asking me if I'm involved in financial fraud! Are you out of your mind, Ryan?!"
"Vanessa, baby, calm down—"
"Don't 'baby' me!" Vanessa yelled. "I knew you were married, but you told me your wife was a pushover! You told me she was broke and stupid! Now police are at my apartment and my neighbors are watching my car get towed away!"
"Vanessa, please, just let me stay at your place tonight—"
"Stay at my place?!" Vanessa spat. "I don't ever want to see your face again! Lose my number!"
The line went dead.
Ryan stood on the side of the road under the glowing fluorescent lights of a gas station overhang. The humid Texas night air felt suffocating. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his corporate phone, scrolling frantically to call his boss at Apex Regional Properties, hoping to explain the sudden garnishment on his corporate accounts.
Before he could dial, an incoming call popped up on his screen.
Caller ID: ARTHUR PENDLETON (CEO - APEX REGIONAL PROPERTIES).
Ryan swallowed hard, wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, and brought the phone to his ear.
"Arthur," Ryan said, trying to force his usual confident executive voice. "Arthur, I am so sorry about whatever administrative legal notice hit HR today. My wife is having a severe mental breakdown over our son's illness, and—"
"Ryan," Arthur Pendleton’s voice interrupted him. It was not angry; it was deathly, terrifyingly cold. "Shut up."
Ryan froze.
"Our legal department just received a formal third-party subpoena and asset garnishment order from Dallas County Family Court," Arthur said, each word hitting Ryan like a physical blow. "Attached to that order was a video of you purchasing a $48,000 automobile for a mistress while using your Apex corporate card to cover processing fees."
"Arthur, I can explain that expense—"
"You used corporate funds for personal extortion of marital assets, Ryan," Arthur said flatly. "Our internal audit team is currently pulling every expense report you've submitted for the past three years. Your corporate security badge has been deactivated. Do not come to the office on Monday. Your personal belongings will be packed in a box and mailed to your lawyer."
"Arthur! You can't fire me over a personal divorce!" Ryan pleaded, tears of desperation finally spilling down his cheeks.
"We aren't firing you over a divorce, Ryan," Arthur replied coldly. "We are terminating you for gross corporate misconduct, fraud, and bringing reputational ruin to this firm. Goodnight."

The call disconnected.
Ryan dropped his phone onto the pavement. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracks. He fell to his knees beside his duffel bag on the cold concrete, gasping for air as the full weight of his hubris crushed him into the dirt.
