Chapter 10 - THE EVER AFTER

Ten years after the night that changed my life forever.
It was a warm Saturday evening in late May.
Our family stood at the edge of the rose garden behind our home, where a beautiful stone fountain murmured softly in the breeze. Mounted on the side of the fountain was a polished bronze plaque bearing an engraving of a small blue whale and the words:
NOAH BENNETT 2009 – 2016 “Your light continues to save the world.”
Maya, now ten years old, placed a bouquet of fresh white roses at the base of the fountain. She stood silently for a moment, resting her hand against her brother's name before turning back to us with a bright, sweet smile.
"He would have loved the roses, Mom," Maya said, walking over to slip her hand into mine.
"He would have loved you even more, sweetie," I smiled, bending down to kiss her forehead.
Marcus stepped up beside us, holding a wooden box filled with white paper lanterns—the bio-degradable lanterns we lit every year on Noah’s birthday.
As the sun sank below the horizon, painting the North Carolina sky in brilliant shades of violet, rose, and gold, we lit the three lanterns together.
One by one, we released them into the cool evening breeze.
We stood together—Marcus, Maya, and I—arms wrapped around each other, watching the three warm lights float gently upward, rising higher and higher into the calm, peaceful sky until they joined the stars.
I looked at my husband, whose eyes reflected the warm glow of the lanterns. I looked at my daughter, whose laughter filled the quiet night with pure, unadulterated joy. And I looked back down at the silver band on my finger and the blue sapphire that matched the vast, beautiful sky above.
I had survived the darkest night a human heart could endure.
I had stripped the wicked of their stolen power, held the selfish accountable for their choices, and built a legacy of life out of the ashes of betrayal.
I was no longer a victim. I was no longer defined by what had been stolen from me.
I was a mother, a wife, a protector, and a woman who had walked through the fire and emerged unbroken.

As the last lantern drifted out of sight into the peaceful night, I took a deep, clear breath, smiled at my family, and walked back into our warm, light-filled home.
