Chapter 9 - SUNSET ON THE RIDGE

That summer, we spent two full weeks at the mountain cabin in the Blue Ridge.

The morning air was crisp and fresh. Eight-year-old Maya ran along the grassy lawn near the stream, chasing yellow butterflies with a small net, her laughter echoing through the trees.

Marcus sat on the wooden porch, sipping black coffee while reviewing our foundation's annual grant allocations on his laptop.

I walked out onto the porch, carrying a tray of fresh blueberry muffins and tea.

"Maya caught three butterflies already," I laughed, setting the tray down on the table. "She insists on naming every single one 'Whaley'."

Marcus chuckled, closing his laptop and pulling me down into the chair beside him. "She has your determination, Claire. Heaven help whatever husband she chooses twenty years from now."

I rested my head against Marcus’s chest, watching the sunlight glitter on the clear mountain stream.

My phone rang softly on the table. It was a private notification from the State Department of Corrections victim portal.

I opened the notification. It was a formal administrative report regarding Inmate #48201-057—Evan Vance.

The report noted that Evan’s request for early sentence reduction had been formally denied by the federal parole board due to the severity of his financial crimes and gross breach of trust. He remained housed at FCI Petersburg, with sixteen years remaining on his sentence. His former co-conspirator, Sabrina Cole, remained incarcerated at a federal facility in West Virginia, her corporate licenses permanently revoked by the state bar and accounting boards.

I closed the notification screen.

There was no satisfaction in reading it, nor was there any remaining pain. It was simply a fact of the world—a closed chapter in a book that had moved on to far more beautiful pages.

"Everything okay?" Marcus asked gently, rubbing my shoulder.

May you like

"Everything is perfect," I answered, putting the phone away forever.

Marcus wrapped his arm around me, and we sat together on the porch, watching our daughter run through the sunlit grass beneath the endless blue sky.
