Chapter 6 - Starlight and Whispers

The high school gymnasium had been transformed into a glowing ballroom of blue lights and paper stars.
When I walked in with Maya and Chloe, heads turned immediately.
"Lily, who are you wearing?!" Sarah, the head of the prom committee, gasped, rushing over. "You look like an heiress!"
"It's a family heirloom," I smiled, feeling a surge of pride.
For two hours, I danced, laughed, and celebrated with my friends. The weight that had rested on my shoulders for three years felt lighter than it ever had. I wasn't the grieving, invisible girl in the back of the class anymore.
At 9:30 PM, the grand doors of the gymnasium opened.
Brianna and Logan walked in. Brianna’s ice-blue dress was striking, but her face was dark with anger. She had spent the last two hours arguing with Logan in his car because he had dared to comment on how incredible I looked at the house.
Behind them, standing near the punch bowl near the entrance, was Alexis.
She hadn't stayed home. She had followed us to the school under the pretense of being a parent chaperone, but her eyes were fixed on me with pure malice.
She couldn't stand that her humiliation had turned into my triumph.
As the music slowed down, Alexis walked purposefully toward the stage where the principal was standing. She whispered something into his ear, gesturing toward me.
A moment later, Principal Vance—Julian Vance’s older brother—looked up, his eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on my dress.

His expression changed instantly from mild curiosity to intense shock.
He grabbed his microphone. "May I have everyone’s attention, please?"
