Chapter 9 - The Unraveling

"That's not all," a deep voice boomed from the back of the gym.

Everyone turned.

Dad was walking down the center aisle of the gymnasium. He wasn't wearing his tired, defeated slump anymore. In his hands, he carried a heavy, black leather ledger—my mother’s personal estate inventory that Alexis had claimed was lost years ago.

Behind him walked two local police officers.

"Mark?" Alexis stammered, her voice trembling. "What... what are you doing here?"

"I went through your private office in the attic while Lily was at prom, Alexis," Dad said, his voice shaking with absolute rage and betrayal. "I found the safety deposit box key. I found my wife's jewelry that you claimed was sold to pay for funeral costs. And I found the receipts showing you tried to sell Claire's custom designer pieces to an online auction house last week."

Gasps echoed through the entire gymnasium.

Brianna hid her face in her hands, backing away into the crowd as students began pulling out their phones to record the scene.

Dad walked up the stage steps and stood right beside me, putting his arm around my shoulders. He looked at Alexis with a cold disgust that shattered three years of lies.

"You didn't just try to humiliate my daughter tonight," Dad said, his voice echoing through the microphone. "You stole from my dead wife. You lied to me about our family's money so you could drain Lily's college fund for your own daughter."

"Mark, please!" Alexis sobbed, reaching for his hand. "I did it for us! For our family!"

"You aren't my family," Dad said quietly. "Officer, she has the stolen jewelry in her purse right now."

The two officers stepped up onto the stage. Within minutes, Alexis Bennett was escorted out of the Westbridge High gymnasium in handcuffs, surrounded by the flashing lights of smartphone cameras and the stunned silence of the entire town.
