Chapter 20 - The Promise of Tomorrow

One year after the adoption papers were signed, the crisp autumn air returned to the Ozarks. The leaves were a brilliant tapestry of red, gold, and orange.

We were hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at the cabin. The house was filled with the rich aroma of roasting turkey and homemade pies. Marcus, Sarah, and Eleanor were all there, sitting around our extended dining table, laughing and sharing stories.

I looked around the room, my heart overflowing.

Tyler was sitting next to Sarah, proudly showing her his straight-A report card from his first full semester back at school. Leo was sitting on Marcus's lap, wearing a sweater that finally fit him perfectly, listening intently to one of Marcus's exaggerated stories about his time in the service.

I stood up, raising my glass. "I want to propose a toast."

The room went quiet, all eyes turning to me.

"A year ago, I stood in a courtroom and promised to protect this family. But the truth is, we only survived because of the people in this room. Eleanor, Marcus, Sarah... you gave us our lives back. And to my boys..." I looked down at Tyler and Leo, who were both smiling up at me. "...you showed me what it means to be a father. You showed me that family isn't just about blood. It's about who you're willing to fight for."

"To family!" Marcus roared, raising his glass.

"To family!" everyone echoed.

After dinner, as the sun began to dip below the Ozark hills, painting the sky in shades of purple and pink, Tyler, Leo, and I walked out onto the front porch. The air was cool, but inside, I had never felt warmer.

Leo slipped his hand into mine, while Tyler leaned against my shoulder.

"What are we doing tomorrow, Dad?" Leo asked, looking up at me with eyes that were bright, clear, and full of dreams.

May you like

I smiled, pulling both of my sons close to my sides as we watched the twilight settle over our peaceful home.

"Whatever we want, Leo," I whispered. "Tomorrow is completely ours."
