Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

For the next three days, we worked tirelessly with Eleanor Vance and the state police. The data Lauren retrieved from Voss's portal was a goldmine of corruption.
It showed that Voss’s foundation was receiving millions in state grants to 'rehabilitate' foster youth, but instead of providing care, they were sending the kids to unlicensed agricultural camps like Calhoun County, pocketing ninety percent of the funds. They had a network of corrupt officials, including several deputies in Calhoun County, who looked the other way in exchange for kickbacks.
Armed with this evidence, the State Attorney General launched a massive raid on the Voss Foundation headquarters and all its affiliate ranches.
I was there with the police when they went back to the Calhoun Agricultural Center.
Director Vance was arrested in his office, his hands cuffed behind his back. As he was led out, he looked at me with pure hatred.
"You ruined everything," he hissed.
"No," I said, stepping close enough to smell his fear. "You did this to yourself when you put your hands on my son."
The police liberated twelve other boys from the farm. They were all malnourished, terrified, and showing signs of abuse. They were immediately taken to hospitals for treatment, and their parents were contacted.
But the biggest victory was yet to come.
Garrett Voss was arrested at the airport, trying to board a private flight to the Bahamas with two suitcases full of cash. He was charged with human trafficking, child abuse, grand larceny, and bribery. His multi-million-dollar empire crumbled overnight.
As for Lauren, her cooperation with the police saved her from jail time, but she faced heavy fines and community service. More importantly, she realized the depth of her mistakes. She agreed to a divorce and gave me full physical custody of Tyler, recognizing that he needed a stable, safe environment to heal.

"I'm sorry, David," she whispered to me outside the courthouse on the day the divorce was finalized. "I hope one day you and Tyler can forgive me."
"I hope so too, Lauren," I said gently. "For your sake."
