Chapter 5 - The Zurich Trap

The satellite link flickered as a new data stream flooded the ruggedized laptop screen.

Lines of code cascaded down the monitor at blinding speed, accompanied by real-time financial ticker updates from European stock exchanges.

Sarah_Sterling: Tyler, explain to me right now what you're doing. What do you mean Apex Horizon won't exist?

A few seconds passed before Tyler’s response appeared on the screen, his typed words carrying an eerie, unnerving maturity that made me forget for a moment that he was only thirteen years old.

T_Secure_Node: Julian Vance built Apex Horizon entirely on leveraged debt and hostile asset acquisitions backed by hidden lines of credit from Eastern European energy syndicates. But his entire financial network runs on a single centralized cloud server located in downtown Zurich—a server managed by Vance Dynamics' legacy infrastructure.

T_Secure_Node: Because Dad used Granddad’s original Sterling 4000 protocol to build that infrastructure, the entire system has a master backdoor hardcoded into the silicon architecture. A backdoor that Julian and Harrison both thought they deleted.

T_Secure_Node: But they didn't.

T_Secure_Node: I did.

My breath hitched. Tyler, you're going to shut down their entire corporate network?

T_Secure_Node: Not just shut it down, Mom. I’m going to trigger the automated liquidation clause encoded in their own smart contracts. Every dollar Julian stole from Granddad’s estate, every offshore account he used to bribe federal regulators, and every shell company he used to crush his competitors is going to be automatically transferred into a public restitution fund managed by the U.S. Treasury.

T_Secure_Node: By breakfast tomorrow, Julian Vance won't just be broke. He’ll be under criminal investigation by Interpol.

Before I could type a reply, the satellite modem beside the laptop emitted a sharp, high-pitched warning beep.

The tracking map on the left side of the screen flashed red.

ALERT: LOCAL RF TRANSMISSION DETECTED WITHIN 50 METERS.

My blood turned to ice.

T_Secure_Node: Mom! Get out of the garage now!

Sarah_Sterling: What?!

T_Secure_Node: They didn't just watch the front door. They tracked the local proxy signal from your phone when you accessed the banking portal. There’s a vehicle entering the alley right now!

Through the cracked window of the garage, I heard it—the low, heavy rumble of an engine idling just outside the wooden sliding door.

Car tires crunched over the gravel in the alleyway. A pair of blinding high-beam headlights swept across the gaps in the rotting wooden slats, casting long, fractured shadows across the cluttered workbench.

Car doors slammed shut. Heavy, decisive footsteps marched up the gravel path toward the side utility door.

"Mrs. Vance?" a harsh, unfamiliar voice called out from the darkness outside, accompanied by the heavy thud of a fist pounding against the wooden door. "We know you're in there. Open the door, or we kick it down."
