Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Garage

The pounding against the wooden side door rattled the rusted padlock hanging from its latch.

"Open the door, Mrs. Vance!" the harsh voice demanded again, followed by the metallic sound of a heavy tool—a crowbar—scraping against the door frame.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked down at the ruggedized laptop. The green hexadecimal code was still scrolling down the screen, finalizing the asset transfer sequence Tyler had initiated across the Atlantic.

If they broke in right now, if they seized the laptop before the final encryption block cleared, Tyler’s entire operation would be exposed, and my son would be flying directly into a trap in Zurich.

T_Secure_Node: Mom, listen to me! Tyler’s text blinked urgently on the screen. Underneath the workbench, there’s a loose floorboard. Pull it up. There’s a micro-transmitter inside. Unplug the main satellite modem and drop it into the pit. It will wipe its own memory banks instantly.

Sarah_Sterling: What about you?! What about the data?!

T_Secure_Node: The data is already mirrored on my onboard flight terminal over the Atlantic. They can't touch me in Swiss airspace. But if they take that laptop, they’ll trace your IP address and lock you up before dawn.

T_Secure_Node: Move, Mom! Now!

The wooden door groaned under a violent kick from the outside. The latch splintered, and a crack of light broke through the dark seam of the door frame.

I didn't hesitate.

I dropped to my knees on the dusty concrete floor, shoving aside boxes of old Christmas decorations and rusted tools. My fingers found the edge of the warped wooden floorboard beneath the workbench. I pulled upward with all my strength.

Crack!

The rotted wood gave way, revealing a dark, shallow crawl space beneath the garage foundation.

I grabbed the heavy cylinder-shaped satellite modem, ripped the power cable and fiber-optic lines out of their ports, and dropped the entire rig down into the pit. A tiny red light flickered twice inside the darkness, followed by a faint internal puff of smoke as the device’s automated self-destruction circuit incinerated its solid-state storage drives.

Bang!

The side door burst open with a deafening crash.

Wood splinters flew across the room as two men in dark tactical suits stepped into the dim light of the garage. Both men wore earpieces, black leather gloves, and carried suppressed sidearms pointed directly at the center of the room.

"Freeze! Don't move an inch!" the lead operative barked, sweeping his flashlight beam across the cluttered space until it landed squarely on me as I scrambled back up from the floorboards.

I stood up slowly, wiping dust from the knees of my jeans, keeping my hands visible and open.

My heart was racing, but an icy, unnatural calm washed over me. I knew what Tyler was doing. I knew the data was safe.

"You're making a massive mistake," I said, my voice steady and cold. "If you touch me, my father’s legal team will have your employers indicted by sunrise."

The lead operative chuckled darkly, stepping closer, his flashlight illuminating the empty workbench where the satellite rig had vanished just seconds before.

"Where is the terminal, Mrs. Vance?" the operative demanded, lowering his weapon just enough to reach for a pair of zip-ties hanging from his tactical belt. "Where did you send the encryption keys?"

Before he could take another step toward me, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail from the operative’s own tactical radio clipped to his shoulder harness.

CRITICAL SYSTEM ALERT. GLOBAL ASSET FREEZE INITIATED. APEX HORIZON HOLDINGS: ACCOUNTS ZEROED.

The operative froze mid-motion, his hand hovering over his belt. He pulled the radio up to his ear, his face draining of all color in the harsh light of the flashlight.

"Sir? What’s happening?" the second operative asked nervously, glancing back toward the open doorway.

Into the radio, a frantic voice shouted over the static: Get out of there! Abort the mission! All secure servers in Zurich just went dark! Our entire liquidity pool has been wiped by an unknown cryptographic override!

The lead operative stared at me, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic. He didn't try to zip-tie my wrists anymore.

Instead, both men turned on their heels, bolted out the broken doorway, and sprinted toward their sedan, tires screaming against the asphalt as they tore out of the alleyway into the dark suburban night.

I stood alone in the dark, ruined garage, a quiet, victorious smile breaking across my face.
