Chapter 4 - THE MASK SLIPS

While the lab processed the chemical analysis, I returned to my car and pulled out my laptop. I knew that waiting passively for the toxicological report was a luxury I couldn't afford. Evelyn was an obsessive, hyper-vigilant woman. My blunt refusal to let her take the kids the previous night would have already triggered her alarm bells. She was likely already working to cover her tracks.

I logged into my home security account.

Three months ago, Evelyn had convinced me to install a "smart security system" at her house so she could "feel safe living alone as an elderly widow." I had set up the account myself using my email and master administrator password. She had never bothered to change it.

I opened the camera portal for Evelyn’s residence on my laptop screen.

The live feed showed her living room—a pristine, sunlit space decorated with floral wallpaper, porcelain figurines, and framed photographs of me as a child.

Evelyn was sitting at her mahogany desk in the corner. She was not crying, nor did she look frail. She was frantically feeding stacks of documents into a heavy-duty cross-cut paper shredder beside her chair.

My pulse spiked.

I watched as she grabbed a stack of blue folders—identical to the ones Chloe had used—and began shredding them page by page. Beside her desk sat two heavy plastic storage bins filled with binders, USB drives, and old notebooks.

She was destroying evidence.

I immediately opened a screen-recording program on my laptop, capturing every second of the live camera feed as she shredded documents. Then, I dialed the local police department's non-emergency line, asking to speak directly to Detective Marcus Thorne—the lead investigator who had handled Chloe’s sudden death case six months prior.

When Thorne took the call, I didn't mince words.

"Detective Thorne, this is Liam Miller. I am calling to report active destruction of evidence related to the death of my wife, Chloe Miller."

Thorne’s tone was skeptical. "Mr. Miller? Chloe’s death was ruled natural cardiac failure six months ago. What are you talking about?"

"I have live security camera footage of my mother, Evelyn Miller, currently shredding files and destroying digital media at her home," I told him, sending the live link directly to his official email while speaking. "I have just submitted a bottle of custom cardiac toxins found in my wife’s hidden belongings to the State Forensic Toxicology Lab under Dr. Helen Vance. Furthermore, I have full audio recordings of my wife detailing how my mother systematically poisoned her and fabricated fake accounts to destroy our marriage."

There was a long, heavy pause on Thorne’s end as he opened the stream link I had sent.

"My God," Thorne muttered, his tone shifting instantly as he watched Evelyn furiously feeding paper into the shredder on his own screen. "She’s burning through files like a furnace."

"I am requesting an immediate emergency preservation order and a search warrant for her premises, Detective," I urged. "If you don't stop her now, she will burn everything that proves what she did to Chloe."

"I’m dispatching two patrol units to secure the perimeter of her house right now," Thorne said, his voice crisp and decisive. "I’m contacting the magistrate for an expedited search warrant based on the forensic submission at the state lab. Mr. Miller, stay where you are. Do NOT approach her house yourself."

I closed my laptop, my teeth clenched so hard my jaw felt bruised.

I wasn't going to sit in a parking lot while my mother destroyed the remaining evidence of my wife’s murder.

I started my truck, threw it into drive, and sped toward my mother’s neighborhood.
