Chapter 6 - THE SIFTING OF ASHES

The search of Evelyn’s house lasted thirty-six hours.
Detective Thorne and the state forensic team turned the Victorian home upside down. What they discovered inside wasn't just evidence of a crime; it was an artifact of an unhealthy, lifelong obsession.
In the basement, behind a false wall in her sewing room, investigators uncovered an entire digital operation center. Three desktop computers, four burner phones, hard drives containing thousands of stolen photographs of Chloe, and meticulous journals logging our family's daily schedules for five years.
Evelyn had installed spyware on Chloe’s phone two years before her death. She knew every text Chloe sent, every grocery list she made, every doctor’s appointment she booked. She had used that information to orchestrate an intricate campaign of gaslighting, ensuring Chloe always felt watched, unsafe, and isolated.
On Sunday evening, Detective Thorne came to my house.
We sat at the kitchen table—the same table where Evelyn had sat late at night drinking tea and telling me I was "doing better than I thought."
Thorne laid out a thick, official binder stamped with the Seal of the State Attorney General.
"The toxicology report came back from Dr. Vance an hour ago, Liam," Thorne said quietly.
I squeezed my hands together under the table until my knuckles turned white. "What did they find?"
"The white capsules contained a lethal concentration of synthetic Digitalis purpurea extract combined with high-dose levothyroxine," Thorne revealed. "In layman's terms, it was a slow-acting cardiac poison. It induced chronic arrhythmias, severe fatigue, and vascular weakness over a period of seven months."
"And the day she died?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Thorne looked down at his notes, his jaw tightening. "The post-mortem review of Chloe's preserved tissue samples confirmed a massive spike in cardiac glycosides on the afternoon of her death. Evelyn didn't just give her capsules. The afternoon Chloe collapsed, Evelyn brought over a container of homemade peach soup. We found traces of the concentrated liquid extract in the empty mason jar recovered from Evelyn’s recycling bin."
A cold, heavy stillness settled over my soul.
It was over. The doubt, the mystery, the lingering shame that Chloe had somehow died from hidden weakness or stress—it was all gone, replaced by the indisputable, terrifying truth.
Chloe had been murdered. But she had also fought back. She had left behind the blue suitcase, knowing that one day, when the fog cleared, her truth would tear Evelyn’s empire to the ground.
"Evelyn is being held without bail at the County Correctional Facility," Thorne told me. "The District Attorney is filing charges for Capital Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Substance, Wire Fraud, and Felony Stalking. She is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole."

"Thank you, Detective," I said, standing up to shake his hand.
"Don't thank me, Liam," Thorne said gently, looking out toward the hallway where Ethan and Harper were helping the twins set the dinner table. "Thank your wife. She was stronger than anyone knew."
