Chapter 2 - THE ARCHITECT OF REVENGE

The back door unlocked with a quiet click.

Two figures stepped into the dimly lit hallway. The first was Dr. Arthur Reynolds, a white-haired physician who had been Walter’s personal doctor for forty years. Behind him was Thomas Sterling, a sharp-eyed corporate attorney wearing a dark charcoal suit, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

Neither man looked surprised to see Walter sitting upright in bed, drinking water and reviewing financial ledgers.

"Walter," Dr. Reynolds said softly, setting his medical kit on the table. He immediately reached out to check Walter’s pulse and blood pressure. "Your vitals are low due to mild dehydration, but your heart rhythm is remarkably stable. You played this dangerous game to the absolute brink, my old friend."

"I had to wait until they committed an undeniable criminal act, Arthur," Walter replied, gesturing toward the hidden camera system. "Leaving an eighty-two-year-old man locked in a room without water or medical care for forty-eight hours constitutes attempted reckless homicide and felony elder abuse. Mr. Sterling, is the recording legally admissible?"

Thomas Sterling opened his briefcase, pulling out a tablet and connecting it to Walter’s hidden security server. He reviewed the footage of Rachel and Derek with a cold, professional eye.

"It’s pristine, Walter," Sterling said, his voice smooth and precise. "The audio clarity is high-definition. The visual identification of Rachel Lawson and Derek Vance is undeniable. Furthermore, the electronic log on the exterior door bolt proves it was secured from the outside prior to their departure for the airport."

Sterling turned to me, extending a hand. "You must be Lucas. Walter has spoken very highly of you during our private late-night encrypted video calls over the past six months."

I shook his hand, still trying to wrap my mind around the scale of the operation. "You’ve been in contact with him this whole time?"

"Of course," Sterling smiled faintly. "Did you really think a man who built a eighty-million-dollar lumber dynasty would leave his back completely unguarded? Walter built a secondary, encrypted communications network inside this room eighteen months ago. Every time Gregory and Rachel signed a forged corporate document, a duplicate copy was routed directly to my office in Hartford."

Sterling laid out three thick folders across the bed.

"Here is the current situation," Sterling explained, pointing to a series of financial flowcharts. "Over the past two years, Gregory Lawson and Derek Vance have siphoned approximately $14 million from Lawson Timber Supply into an entity called 'Vanguard Holdings' in Nassau. They believe they own eighty percent of the operating stock of the timber yards."

"Don't they?" I asked, remembering the papers Rachel had forced me to sign as operational manager six months ago.

"No," Walter interrupted, slamming his palm onto the mattress. "They own eighty percent of Lawson Timber Supply Incorporated. But what those arrogant fools forgot—or rather, never bothered to check in the town land registry—is that the company Incorporated does not own the land, the trees, or the machinery."

Walter reached into the binder and pulled out an ancient, yellowed parchment deed bearing a deep red wax seal.

"Thirty years ago, I placed all 12,000 acres of prime pine forest, the three processing sawmills, the heavy transport fleet, and the water-rights permits into a private family land trust," Walter said, his eyes glittering with fierce satisfaction. "The company merely leases the land and equipment from the trust on a year-to-year basis. And who controls the trust, Mr. Sterling?"

"As of midnight yesterday," Sterling replied, pulling out a fresh set of legal documents, "control of the Lawson Family Land Trust has been officially transferred from Walter Lawson to his sole designated trustee and primary heir."

Sterling handed me a gold fountain pen and pointed to the signature line at the bottom of the parchment.

"Sign here, Lucas," Sterling said quietly. "As of this moment, you are the absolute owner of the land beneath their feet, the mills that cut their wood, and the roads their trucks drive on. Rachel and her parents own nothing more than a hollow corporate shell carrying $18 million in unpaid bank debt."

My hand hovered over the paper. "They think I’m a broke worker, Walter. If I do this..."

"If you do this, Lucas, you take back your dignity," Walter said, his voice filled with absolute conviction. "You worked yourself to the bone for that family while they laughed at you behind your back. They used you as a shield and treated you like a dog. Now, it’s time to show them what happens when the shepherd stops protecting the wolves."

I pressed the tip of the gold pen to the paper.

With a firm, steady stroke, I signed my name: Lucas Vance.

"Excellent," Sterling said, stamping the document with a notary seal. "Now, phase two begins. Rachel and her parents are currently staying at the Royal Palm Resort in Nassau, occupying a $10,000-a-night oceanfront villa paid for with stolen company funds. Derek Vance has just scheduled a private celebration dinner tomorrow night at the resort’s main dining room to sign the final offshore transfer papers."

"They think they're celebrating their victory," I said, a slow, cold smile finally creeping across my own face.

"Let them celebrate," Walter growled, turning his face toward the window as the first light of dawn broke over the mountains. "Lucas, I want you to book a flight to Nassau on the company jet—the one they don't know I still hold the personal lease on. You are going to attend that dinner."

"And what about you, Walter?" I asked.

May you like

Walter stood up from his bed. He didn't lean on a cane. He didn't wobble. He stood tall, broad-shouldered, and straight, like an ancient oak that had weathered a hundred winter storms.

"I’m coming with you," Walter said quietly. "I want to see Rachel’s face when the man she left to die walks into her dining room."
