Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF THE LAWSONS

The silence in the restaurant was so absolute that you could hear the waves crashing against the beach two hundred yards away.

Derek Vance was the first to react. He snatched the stack of transfer documents from the table and tried to slip past the marble pillar toward the rear emergency exit.

"Derek Vance!" Lead Officer Miller of the Bahamian Police called out, stepping directly into his path with two armed officers. "Stand down and place your hands on your head immediately!"

"This is a mistake!" Derek yelled, his cool facade shattering into frantic panic. "I’m just a financial consultant! I don't own the company! I was just following instructions from Gregory Lawson!"

"You pathetic coward!" Gregory screamed, turning on Derek with bared teeth. "You were the one who set up the Cayman accounts! You were the one who told us to cut off the old man's medical budget!"

"Quiet, both of you!" Lead Officer Miller commanded, pulling out steel handcuffs. "You are all named in a federal extradition warrant issued by the United States District Court of Connecticut."

Federal Agent Hayes stepped forward, pulling a thick document from his coat.

"Gregory Lawson, Pamela Lawson, Rachel Lawson-Vance, and Derek Vance," Agent Hayes read with terrifying monotony. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate tax evasion, and attempted felony endangerment of an at-risk elderly adult."

"Attempted murder?!" Rachel shrieked, springing up from her chair and lunging toward me. She grabbed my lapels, her eyes wild, tears smearing her heavy makeup. "Lucas! Tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake! I’m your wife, Lucas! You love me! Tell them we were just taking a short vacation!"

I looked down at Rachel’s hands on my suit jacket.

Six years of marriage. Six years of working sixteen-hour days to make her happy, to earn her respect, to feel like I belonged in her grand family.

I gently, deliberately took her wrists, unclasped her fingers from my jacket, and pushed her hands away.

"You left him locked in a room without water, Rachel," I said, my voice dead and cold. "You sat on this terrace an hour ago and laughed about leaving me in the mud in Idaho. You didn't love me. You loved what you could extract from me."

"Lucas, please!" Rachel sobbed, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, grabbing the hem of my trousers. "They made me do it! It was my father! It was Derek! Derek manipulated me, Lucas! He tricked me!"

"Shut up, Rachel!" Derek spat as an officer pinned his arms behind his back, clicking handcuffs over his wrists. "You came to my apartment six months ago begging me to find a way to get rid of your husband! You said he was a broke country redneck who was holding you back!"

Rachel’s parents were already being escorted away in handcuffs. Pamela was sobbing hysterically, while Gregory looked like a deflated balloon, staring blankly at the floor as the officers marched him past the horrified diners.

Agent Hayes turned to Rachel, snapping handcuffs around her manicured wrists. "Up on your feet, ma'am. You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers pulled Rachel to her feet, she looked back at her grandfather.

"Grandpa... please..." Rachel wept, her voice trembling with desperate terror. "I’m your granddaughter... your own flesh and blood..."

Walter looked at her. There was no hatred in his eyes. There was only a cold, profound disappointment that cut deeper than any blade.

"My flesh and blood died two years ago in that back room, Rachel," Walter said quietly. "What stands before me tonight is just a parasite that forgot who fed it."

The police marched Rachel, Derek, Gregory, and Pamela out through the grand lobby of the Royal Palm Resort, surrounded by flashing red and blue lights, while hotel guests recorded the entire humiliation on their smartphones.

When the restaurant was quiet again, Walter turned to me.

He laid his heavy hand on my shoulder, looking out over the dark ocean.

"The air smells cleaner already, Lucas," Walter said softly.

"What happens now, Walter?" I asked, looking at the empty table covered in spilled champagne and shattered glass.

"Now, Lucas," Walter smiled, his dark eyes glowing with newfound life, "we go back to Connecticut. We fire every corrupt manager in the company, we pay our loggers a twenty percent bonus, and we build the timber business into what it was always meant to be."
