Chapter 5 - The Shadow Director

"You framed me," I breathed, the sheer scope of the nightmare settling into my bones. "You used my credentials to execute non-viable patients."

"Not non-viable," Pierce corrected smoothly, stepping closer. "They were terminal, Ethan. They were going to die within weeks anyway. We simply accelerated the timeline to gather neural tissue data for our investors. Your wife stumbled onto the discrepancy when she was doing the audit for the hospital foundation last month."

"Laura..." I gasped. "Where is she?"

"She went to your brother because she didn't know if she could trust you," Pierce said with a cold, pitying smile. "She thought you were in on it. She showed Mason the logs. Mason tried to extract her and Noah tonight, but my security team caught them at the motel before they could hit the interstate."

"You poisoned my son!" I roared, taking a step toward him.

"The boy was leverage," Pierce replied coldly, raising the pistol higher. "We needed Laura to hand over the decrypted hard drive she took from the administration vault. She swore she’d give it up if we spared the boy. Unfortunately for her, Mason proved... unexpectedly violent in the motel room. He fought back. A bottle of the trial compound shattered."

A heavy footstep echoed down the dark hallway behind Pierce.

A tall figure stepped out of the old seclusion room at the end of the hall.

It was Laura.

Her hospital gown was gone, replaced by a dark coat. Her hair was damp, her face pale and bruised, but her eyes were wide, clear, and sharp.

In her right hand, she held a heavy iron fire extinguisher.

"She didn't give you the hard drive, Marcus," Laura said, her voice shaking with pure, unadulterated rage. "I did."

Before Pierce could turn, Laura swung the heavy fire extinguisher with all the force in her body, crashing it directly into the side of Pierce’s knee.

A sickening crack echoed through the corridor.

Pierce screamed in agony, dropping to his hands and knees as his leg buckled beneath him. The pistol clattered across the linoleum floor.

I lunged forward, kicking the gun down the hall, and grabbed Laura, pulling her tightly against my chest.

"Ethan!" she sobbed, holding onto my jacket, her chest heaving. "Noah... is Noah alive?!"

"He’s breathing, baby," I whispered into her hair, tears blinding my eyes. "He’s upstairs. He’s alive."

On the floor, Pierce spat blood onto the dust, clutching his shattered knee, his eyes gleaming with dark malice.

"You think this ends in this hallway?" Pierce hissed, laughing through his teeth. "You think I run this trial? Look at the spreadsheet, Ethan! Look at the board of directors!"

I looked back at the glowing laptop screen.

At the very top of the document, printed under the corporate seal of Vanguard Medical Holdings, was the name of the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.
