Chapter 6 - The Legacy of Ash

My father had been dead for four years. Or so I believed.
He had been a prominent thoracic surgeon at St. Mercy until his sudden, quiet retirement in 2022, followed by a reported fatal plane crash off the coast of Maine. His body was never recovered.
I stared at the glowing laptop screen, my breath catching in my throat as the file details opened before my eyes.
"He isn't in Maine, Ethan," Laura whispered, her hand trembling as she touched the edge of the monitor. "Your father didn't die in that crash. Vanguard Medical was created three months before his disappearance. The entire offshore trust—the money Mason found in the ledger—it's all signed under his living estate."
Pierce cackled from the floor, holding his knee, blood soaking through his trousers. "Arthur built this hospital's private research wing twenty years ago! You really thought a simple ICU nurse became charge nurse at thirty-two on merit alone? Your father cleared your path, Ethan! He needed a blind, obedient worker in the trauma bay!"
"Shut up!" I yelled, turning on Pierce.
"He's coming here," Pierce sneered, looking at his watch. "The private transport helipad on the roof. In ten minutes, the vault records are being wiped remotely, and the entire seventh floor is scheduled for an electrical 'accidental demolition fire.' You have ten minutes to get your boy out before this building burns."
From deep within the walls, a heavy mechanical click echoed.
The ventilation shafts began to hiss. A thin, sweet-smelling white mist began to pour from the ceiling grates.
Halon gas. The fire suppression system had been activated manually. Halon displaced oxygen rapidly—in an enclosed space, it would induce unconsciousness in less than two minutes, followed by cardiac arrest.
"Ethan, we have to go!" Laura pulled my arm frantically.
"The laptop," I said. I grabbed the silver computer, yanked the power cable, and slammed the lid shut, stuffing it into my coat.
I grabbed Pierce by his lapels, dragging him toward the hallway door. "You're coming with us. You're going to tell Vance everything."
"I'm not going anywhere," Pierce wheezed, his eyes rolling back as the oxygen levels in the hall began to plunge. "Arthur doesn't leave witnesses... not even his partners."
He shoved my hands away with a burst of frantic strength, rolling backward into the darkness of the nurse's station as the heavy fire doors automatically slammed shut, locking the wing behind a thick steel barrier.

"Ethan! The stairs!" Laura screamed, coughing as the air thinned out.
We ran into the emergency stairwell, taking the concrete steps three at a time down toward the ICU floor.
