Chapter 5 - The Escalation

The study was dim, lined with dark walnut wood, floor-to-ceiling glass cases containing rare artifacts, and a massive mahogany desk facing the garden.

Victor poured two glasses of water from a crystal decanter, offering one to Clara. She accepted it, her fingers briefly brushing against his. A sudden, sharp electric pulse seemed to jump between them at the contact, making Clara pull her hand back slightly.

Victor took a seat behind his desk, gesturing for her to sit opposite him.

"Your ex-husband came to my office in downtown Chicago two hours ago," Victor said directly, leaving no room for gentle transitions.

Clara’s breath hitched. "Derek was at your office?"

"He attempted to bypass security by claiming he had critical intelligence regarding a domestic security threat in my household," Victor continued, his tone dangerously calm. "When my security team detained him in the lobby, he produced documents showing he has filed an emergency order to take your daughter into protective custody."

Clara stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor. "He can't do that! He's using false allegations! He told the court I'm living in an unstable environment—"

"Sit down, Clara," Victor said. His voice was not an order; it was a anchor.

Clara pressed her hands against the desk, her chest heaving, her eyes blazing with fierce, maternal fury. "I will not let him take her, Mr. Hale. I will leave this job today if I have to. I will sleep on the street outside the courthouse—"

"I said sit down," Victor repeated, softer this time.

Clara slowly lowered herself back into the chair, her hands shaking uncontrollably in her lap.

Victor reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, thick folder, placing it on the desk between them. "Derek Vance is a gambler, Miss Bennett. He owes four hundred thousand dollars to an unregistered private lending firm in Cook County. He believes that by gaining full custody of your daughter, he can force your late parents' trust fund—which is locked until Lily turns eight under joint guardianship—to release emergency support funds to pay off his debts."

Clara stared at the folder, her mind spinning. "How... how do you know all this?"

"I run a global security and logistics firm, Clara," Victor said, leaning back in his chair, folding his hands. "When someone brings trouble to my doorstep, I don't just defend. I investigate. Your ex-husband is a desperate man using a legal system he thinks he can manipulate."

"The hearing is in twelve days," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "My lawyer said if I don't have a permanent lease and six months of verified high-level income proof by Friday, the judge will grant temporary custody to Derek pending trial."

Victor looked at her for a long, heavy moment. He saw no weakness in her—only the terrifying, beautiful strength of a mother fighting for her child. It was a strength he recognized. It was the same fire he had carried when he fought to protect his four sons after losing Elizabeth.

"I have a proposition for you, Clara," Victor said slowly.

Clara frowned suspiciously. "What kind of proposition?"

"I am offering you a permanent, five-year contract as the Master Household Manager and Guardian Caregiver of the Hale Estate," Victor stated, his eyes locked onto hers. "The salary is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually, with full medical benefits, an executive housing allowance, and legal representation provided by my corporate firm."

Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt. "Two... two hundred and fifty thousand?"

"Under one condition," Victor added, his voice dropping into a deep, intense tone.

"What condition?" Clara asked guardedly.

"You move your daughter, Lily, into the east wing of this estate by tomorrow evening," Victor said. "She will have her own suite, access to private tutoring alongside my sons, and full security protection under my team."

Clara stared at him, dumbfounded. "Why? Why would you do that for a stranger?"

May you like

Victor stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing right beside her chair. He leaned down slightly, his presence overwhelming, powerful, and strangely comforting.

"Because three hours ago, I watched my four broken, grieving sons laugh for the first time in three years," Victor whispered, his dark eyes searching hers. "You aren't a stranger anymore, Clara. You are the only person who has managed to heal this house. And nobody touches what belongs to my house. Not Derek Vance. Not anyone."
