Chapter 6 - The Arrival

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Hale estate opened at 4:00 PM the following afternoon to admit a taxicab carrying Clara and her seven-year-old daughter, Lily.

Lily was a quiet child with large, expressive hazel eyes and dark brown curls that cascaded past her shoulders. She clutched a worn, stuffed velvet rabbit to her chest, staring up at the towering stone mansion with open apprehension.

"Is this a castle, Mommy?" Lily asked softly as the cab pulled up to the front entrance.

"It's a big house, sweetie," Clara smiled gently, kissing the top of Lily's head. "And the man who lives here is helping us."

"Is he mean?"

"No," Clara said, though her own heart was fluttering with nerves. "He's... serious. But he's good."

When the front doors opened, Victor Hale was not standing in the foyer alone.

Arranged in a straight, remarkably tidy line were Mason, Cole, Ryder, and Theo. All four boys were dressed in dark trousers and collared shirts—a miracle orchestrated entirely by Mrs. Whitaker.

Lily shrank back slightly behind Clara’s leg, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly.

Mason stepped forward first. He looked at Lily, then at her stuffed rabbit, and then at Clara.

"Is that your daughter?" Mason asked.

"Yes, Mason," Clara said carefully. "This is Lily."

Cole stepped up beside Mason, reaching into his pocket. Clara’s instincts flared—she almost stepped between them, expecting a stink bomb or an apple—but Cole pulled out a small, freshly polished brass compass.

He extended it toward Lily. "If you get lost in the house, use this. The east wing is magnetic north."

Lily blinked, her small hand slowly reaching out from behind Clara's dress to take the shiny compass. "Thank you."

Ryder held out a box of juice—unopened, un-spilled. "Don't step on the lower cabinet by the pantry. It's still a little slippery."

Theo didn't speak. He stepped forward and handed Lily a carefully drawn map of the estate, complete with a tiny drawn rabbit marking the room in the east wing that had been prepared for her.

Lily looked at the drawing, her face lighting up with a brilliant, breathless smile. "Mommy, look! There's a picture of Barnaby!"

Clara looked up, her eyes shining with unshed tears, and caught Victor standing at the top of the grand stairs, watching the scene unfold.

Victor slowly descended the stairs, his dark suit impeccable, his eyes fixed on Clara and her daughter. He stopped three feet away, sinking gracefully down to one knee so he was at eye level with Lily.

"Welcome to the Hale house, Lily," Victor said, his deep voice carrying a strange, gentle warmth that Clara had never heard before. "I am Victor. If my boys bother you, you tell your mother, and she will make them clean the kitchen."

May you like

Lily giggled—a bright, silver sound that seemed to echo through the grand foyer, dispelling years of lingering gloom. "Okay, Mr. Victor."

Victor stood up, his gaze shifting to Clara. The silent understanding between them was absolute. The war for Lily’s safety was far from over, but within these walls, an impenetrable fortress had been built.
