Chapter 9 - A Question Answered

A year after that fateful Tuesday night call, the snow was falling softly outside the grand ballroom of the Columbus Cultural Center.
Nathan was hosting the annual Pierce Foundation Gala, a charity event that had raised over three million dollars to support low-income single mothers and pediatric emergency services across the state.
Amara stood beside him, stunning in an emerald green silk evening gown, her hair styled in soft waves, looking every bit the graceful, confident woman she had become.
During his keynote speech, Nathan stood at the podium before five hundred distinguished guests, local leaders, and press cameras.
"One year ago," Nathan spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the hall, "I thought success was measured in acquisition percentages, market cap, and revenue margins. I was a man who lived by numbers."
He looked out into the crowd, finding Amara sitting at the head table alongside four-year-old Kira and Caden, who were dressed in adorable formal outfits.
"Then I received a phone call from a little girl who didn't know how to spell her own home address," Nathan smiled softly. "She taught me that the most valuable thing we possess isn't what we earn—it's who we answer for when they call."
The audience erupted into warm applause.
When Nathan returned to the table, Kira reached out and grabbed his sleeve, tugging gently.
"Nathan?" Kira asked loudly enough for the whole table to hear. "Are you going to be our dad now?"
The guests at the table smiled warmly. Amara blushed, her heart racing as she looked at Nathan.
Nathan didn't hesitate. He reached into his tuxedo jacket pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and set it on the table in front of Amara.

"I was waiting for the right moment," Nathan said softly, his dark eyes brimming with love and devotion. "Amara Johnson, you saved my life just as much as I helped yours. Will you make me the luckiest man in the world?"
Tears of pure happiness welled in Amara's eyes. "Yes," she whispered. "Yes!"
