Chapter 9 - The Rosewood Studio

When our private car pulled into the driveway of the Greenwich estate an hour later, the sun was high in a cloudless blue sky.

The grounds were green, vibrant, and alive with the sounds of songbirds and blooming spring flowers.

Nathaniel led me, holding Sophia and Eli by their hands, around the east wing toward the old ballroom entrance.

I gasped as I stepped through the doors.

The dark, gloomy, rain-damaged ballroom was gone.

In its place was a breathtaking, sun-drenched dance studio. The heavy oak panels had been restored to a warm, golden honey tone. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors lined the west wall, reflecting the sunlight streaming through newly installed arched glass bay windows that opened directly onto a private rose garden.

In the center of the room sat a brand-new, hand-crafted Steinway grand piano made of dark rosewood.

And mounted on the wall above the piano was a beautifully framed black-and-white photograph of Evelyn Reed, captured mid-leap during her final performance, smiling brilliantly under a spotlight.

Beneath the photograph was an engraved silver plaque that read:

THE EVELYN & SOPHIA DANCE ACADEMY FOR CHILDRENWhere every child is taught to dance feet first.

Tears of overwhelming joy welled in my eyes as I covered my mouth with my hands. "Nathaniel... this is breathtaking!"

"Evelyn always wanted to open a community ballet school for children who couldn't afford expensive city academies," Nathaniel said softly, coming up behind me and wrapping his arms securely around my waist. "We’re launching the foundation’s first youth dance program right here next month. And Sophia is going to be the very first student."

"DANCING LADY!" Eli cheered, pointing up at the photograph on the wall.

Sophia let go of Eli’s hand, stepped out into the center of the golden wooden floor, and lifted her arms above her head in her signature, delicate circle.

She spun once. Twice. Her feet moved with a light, joyous, perfect rhythm.

"Look, Mommy! Look, Daddy!" Sophia laughed, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight. "I didn't fall!"

Nathaniel laughed softly, pressing his forehead against mine as we watched our children dance together in the warm sunlight.
