Chapter 10 - The Garden of Life

The glass doors of the patio opened, and Caleb walked out into the sunshine.
He wore a fine linen shirt, dark trousers, and comfortable leather shoes. He walked with a smooth, effortless stride, his posture strong, his eyes clear and bright.
He carried a tray with a glass of iced tea and a plate of fresh pastries.
Lily stopped her dance, sliding across the marble, landing right in front of him with a wide, radiant grin.
"Hot dogs!" Lily shouted, holding up her hands like a vendor. "Cold iced tea! Broken lives fixed for free!"
Caleb laughed—a deep, rich, wonderful sound that echoed through the sunlit garden, carrying across the brick walls into the quiet streets of Beacon Hill.
He set the tray down on the marble table, knelt down on one knee—his legs fully supporting his weight—and looked straight into Lily’s hazel eyes.
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and opened it.
Inside was a delicate gold necklace with a tiny pendant shaped like a dancing shoe, encrusted with a single small diamond.
"For the girl who danced in the forbidden garden," Caleb said softly, fastening the necklace around Lily’s neck.
Lily looked down at the glittering shoe, her eyes wide with wonder. She threw her small arms around Caleb’s neck, hugging him tight.
"Thank you, Caleb!" she chirped.
Caleb held the little girl close, looking over her shoulder at Clara, who smiled at him with deep, tears-of-joy gratitude, and at the bright blue sky shining through the glass roof above.

The darkness that had held his heart captive for eight years was gone. The stone walls had fallen. The crippled ghost was dead, and in his place stood a man who had reclaimed his honor, his family, and his life.
Caleb stood up, taking Clara’s hand, walking beside the children through the open gates of the garden into the warm, endless sunshine of their new tomorrow.
