Chapter 6 - Dinner with the King

At 7:00 PM, the grand dining room of the Marino mansion was lit by massive crystal chandeliers.

The long mahogany table, capable of seating twenty people, was set with fine porcelain china, silver cutlery, and fresh flowers.

Clara stood at the entrance of the room, looking terrified in her simple cotton dress. Beside her, Leo wore a clean collared shirt, looking nervously at the armed guards standing near the doors.

Lily, however, skipped right into the room, wearing her favorite Red Sox hoodie, looking at the high ceilings in awe.

"Wow," Lily said, walking up to the table. "This looks like the castle in my storybook!"

Caleb sat at the head of the table in his wheelchair. He was wearing a fresh charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back, his posture commanding absolute authority.

"Sit down, Clara," Caleb said, gesturing to the seats closest to him.

Clara swallowed hard, walking over and guiding her children into the high-backed velvet chairs. "Mr. Marino... I don't understand. Why are we eating here? I am the housekeeper—"

"You were Marco Rossi’s wife," Caleb said plainly.

Clara froze. The color drained completely from her face. She reached out, instantly gripping her children's hands. "You... you know?"

"I know Marco was loyal to me until his last breath," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a warm, gentle tone he hadn't used in eight years. "And I know Dominic Moretti has been looking for Marco's offshore ledgers ever since."

Clara lowered her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Marco hid a encrypted drive in Lily’s stuffed bear before he died. He told me if Moretti ever found out, he would kill us all. I came here... I applied for the job here because I thought Moretti wouldn't dare attack a fortified estate owned by the Marino family."

"You were right," Caleb said.

"I’m sorry for deceiving you, sir," Clara sobbed. "I will pack our things and leave tonight—"

"You're not leaving anywhere," Caleb interrupted firmly.

Lily looked up from her plate, tilting her head at Caleb. "Are you mad at my mom, Mister?"

Caleb looked at the little girl. The fierce, terrifying mob boss vanished, replaced by a man whose heart was slowly beating back to life.

"No, Lily," Caleb said softly. "I'm not mad at your mom. In fact, I owe you a debt."

Lily blinked her hazel eyes. "For my dance?"

"For your dance," Caleb nodded. "You brought something back to this house that was lost a long time ago."

He reached across the table, picking up a small silver bell, and rang it once.

Two servants walked into the room carrying giant silver trays covered with domed lids. They set them down in front of Lily and Leo and lifted the lids.

Underneath were six hot dogs, two large boxes of crispy French fries, and two large cups of soda—the exact food Lily had joked about selling in the garden.

Lily’s eyes lit up like stars. "Hot dogs! From the stadium?!"

"Cold sodas and hot dogs," Caleb smiled—a full, real smile that lit up his scarred face. "Broken smiles fixed for free."

Leo looked at his sister, then at Caleb, a small, tentative smile breaking across his young face for the first time.

Clara covered her mouth, weeping silently, not out of fear, but out of overwhelming gratitude.

From the doorway, Vance watched the scene with a tight, approving nod. But then Vance’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, read a text message, and his expression instantly darkened.

Vance stepped up to Caleb’s side, leaning down to whisper in his ear.

"Boss," Vance whispered. "Moretti just called a meeting of the Five Harbor Families for tomorrow night at the Italian Center in the North End. He’s planning to officially declare your territory abandoned and divide your port contracts among his lieutenants."

Caleb’s smile slowly faded, replaced by an icy, lethal calm.

May you like

He took a slow sip of his water.

"Let him call the meeting," Caleb whispered back to Vance. "I’ll deliver my response in person."
