Chapter 6 - The Gilded Net

By noon, the story had broken across the state. Derek Hale’s arrest had pulled back the curtain on a massive, multi-million-dollar land acquisition scandal involving several prominent city officials and a shell corporation designed to seize family-owned farms along the proposed highway expansion route.
Benjamin sat in his corporate office on the top floor of the Cross Building, his legal team lined up in front of his desk.
"We’ve secured a temporary restraining order against any representative of the Hale estate," his chief counsel, Elena Vance, explained. "And the county prosecutor is fast-tracking the indictment against Derek. But Benjamin... the property deeds for the Hale farm are still tied up in the corporate registry. If Derek’s partners try to dissolve the shell company, Rachel and Oliver could lose the land to bankruptcy court before she even wakes up."
"Then buy the debt," Benjamin said without looking up from his monitor.
Elena blinked. "Sir? That debt is over eight hundred thousand dollars in manufactured back taxes and fraudulent liens."
"I don't care if it's eight million," Benjamin said, turning his chair to face her. "Clear the liens. Buy out the shell company’s options. Transfer the entire land title into an independent trust under Oliver Hale’s name, with Rachel as the sole trustee. Do it before the courts close today."
"Benjamin," Elena said softly, stepping closer to the desk. "This isn't like you. This project has zero return on investment. You’re spending a fortune on a family you met in a dumpster twelve hours ago."
Benjamin stood up, walking to the window. He looked out over the city, his reflection matching the memory of the little boy on the porch. "Thirty years ago, Elena, a man in a gray suit walked past me when I was screaming for help. He had a million reasons why it wasn't his problem. Today, I have a million reasons why it is. Prepare the paperwork."
Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Rachel Hale had finally regained consciousness. The doctors reported that her neurological function was intact, though her body would need weeks to recover from the severe exposure.
When Benjamin walked into her room later that afternoon, Oliver was curled up at the foot of her bed, his head resting against her leg. Rachel looked up, her green eyes clear now, filled with a profound, exhausted gratitude.

"You're the man from the market," she whispered, her hand reaching out to touch Benjamin’s arm. "Oliver told me... you came back."
"I came back, Rachel," Benjamin said, taking her hand. "And you don't ever have to worry about Derek, or the farm, ever again."
