Chapter 7 - The Trap Collapses

It happened on a crisp Tuesday afternoon.
Briar had insisted on visiting the Brooklyn Stray Animal Sanctuary—a non-profit shelter she was planning to renovate using her earnings. Damien had assigned Viktor and four armed guards to escort her, while Titan rode happily in the back of the SUV.
As Briar stepped out of the shelter's rear entrance, two heavy delivery vans screeched to a halt, blocking the alleyway.
"Ambush!" Viktor roared, drawing his weapon.
Automatic gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon. Viktor and Damien's men fought fiercely, but the Luciano mercenaries outnumbered them three to one. Flashbang grenades exploded in the alley, blinding the guards and disorienting Titan inside the vehicle.
Before Viktor could reach her, three men tackled Briar to the ground, shoving a heavy black hood over her head and dragging her into the back of a van.
"Get the dog too!" one mercenary yelled.
Titan slammed his massive body against the van's side door, roaring with fury as the vehicle sped away into the afternoon traffic.
Ten minutes later, Damien received the call inside his boardroom.
"Boss," Viktor’s bloody voice came through the speaker, choked with rage and guilt. "They took her. It was Luciano’s men... and Corbin Vance. I'm sorry, Boss... I failed."
Damien stood up. The heavy mahogany boardroom table cracked under the pressure of his hands as he leaned forward. The air in the room became so suffocatingly cold that five mob captains sitting around him instinctively reached for their weapons.
"Where is Titan?" Damien asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"Titan escaped into the streets during the shootout, Boss," Viktor rasped. "We're tracking his GPS collar now. He's running south toward the abandoned shipyard on Pier 4."

Damien pulled his custom silver-plated Kimber .45 from his shoulder holster, racking the slide with a metallic clack.
"Call every soldier in the five boroughs," Damien ordered, his eyes turning to burning coals. "We are burning Pier 4 to the ground."
