Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Tenth Street

The leak was executed with surgical precision. Sienna spent the next three days routing the encrypted Baltic Line financial data through a series of anonymous servers, delivering them directly to the inbox of a federal prosecutor who had spent his entire career trying to dismantle the Moretti family.
The response from Victor’s syndicate was instantaneous and brutal.
It happened on a Thursday evening. Sienna was walking home from the local grocery store, two paper bags cradled in her arms. The streetlamps of Tenth Street were just starting to flicker on, casting long, pale shadows across the wet pavement.
A black van pulled up to the curb beside her, its side door sliding open with a heavy screech.
Sienna didn't scream. Her instinct, honed by years of surviving the harshest corners of the city, kicked in instantly. She dropped the grocery bags, the glass bottles of olive oil and milk shattering on the concrete, and reached into her purse for her revolver.
But she was too slow. Two large men in tactical gear grabbed her, pulling her into the dark interior of the van. A sweet, chemical-smelling cloth was pressed hard against her face. She fought, kicking and scratching, her nails tearing into the flesh of one of her attackers, but the darkness rushed in quickly, swallowing her whole.
When Dawson arrived at the apartment twenty minutes later, he found the shattered groceries on the sidewalk. He saw the dark, wet stains of spilled milk and the broken glass reflecting the yellow streetlights.
And lying in the middle of the mess was a single, clean red button.
Dawson stared at the button. It was the same type of button he had lifted in the rain all those months ago—the moment he had decided to stop being his father’s weapon and start being a human being.
The phone in his pocket vibrated. It was an unknown number.
"You have six hours, Dawson," Victor’s voice said, no longer smooth, but raw with desperation. "The federal authorities just froze our primary clearing accounts. You are going to give us the decryption keys to unlock those files, or your little waitress is going to find out how deep the Chicago River really is."
May you like
"Where?" Dawson asked, his voice completely flat, devoid of any human emotion.
"The old grain elevator on Damen Avenue," Victor said. "Come alone. If we see a single cop, or any of Rocco’s men, she goes over the ledge."
