Chapter 10 - The Horizon over the River

One year later.

The old grain elevator on Damen Avenue was no longer an abandoned monument to Chicago’s industrial past. It had been completely renovated, its massive concrete columns cleaned and reinforced, its interior transformed into the primary distribution hub of Moretti-Vance Logistics.

The business was entirely legitimate, employing over two hundred local workers, many of whom were individuals looking for a second chance at life—men and women who, like Dawson, had known the mud of the city and wanted a way out.

The sun was setting over the river, casting a warm, amber glow across the newly paved yard.

Sienna stood on the wooden deck of the main office overlooking the water, a clipboard cradled in her arm. She wore a simple, elegant green dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the spring breeze. The scars on her wrists had faded into thin, barely visible silver lines—no longer a symbol of pain, but a badge of survival.

A pair of strong, familiar arms slid around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest. Dawson leaned down, burying his face in her hair, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of her.

He was wearing a clean, dark blue button-down shirt, his wild black hair neatly trimmed, his throat tattoo still visible but no longer carrying the weight of a curse.

"The late-shift trucks are all loaded, boss," Dawson whispered, his gravelly voice now filled with a deep, permanent peace. "The manifests are clear. Rocco confirmed the New York shipment arrived ahead of schedule."

"Excellent," Sienna smiled, turning around in his embrace to look up into his dark, clear eyes. "It seems my assistant is getting very good at his job."

"He has a good teacher," Dawson laughed softly, his lips meeting hers in a long, slow kiss that tasted of sweet spring air and a future without fear.

Below them, the Chicago River rolled past, its clean, blue waters reflecting the wide, unbroken sky. The war was over. The shadows had finally receded, leaving only the beautiful, golden horizon of a life they had fought for, bled for, and ultimately won together.
