Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The corporate headquarters of Harrison Tech rose sixty stories above the Boston skyline, a monument of glass and steel.

Colin Dray sat in his glass-walled office on the top floor, reviewing the quarterly financial statements of the Harrison Foundation. He was feeling pleased with himself. He had arranged for a local city inspector to "discover" several building code violations at Sarah Lin's apartment building the following morning. By tomorrow afternoon, the Lins would be forced to vacate, and with the fifty-thousand-dollar check in hand, they would have no choice but to take the money and run to another state, just as he had planned.

The heavy oak doors of his office suite flew open with a bang that shattered the quiet, professional atmosphere of the executive floor.

Colin jumped up from his leather chair.

Richard Harrison stormed into the office. Behind him was his head of security, a massive former Secret Service agent named Vance, and two security guards.

"Richard?" Colin said, his voice faltering slightly before he quickly recovered his smooth composure. "What’s going on? We have the board meeting in twenty minutes—"

Richard didn't speak. He walked straight up to Colin’s desk, took the manila envelope containing the check and the NDA, and slammed it down onto the glass surface. The glass rings vibrated with a sharp, high-pitched hum.

Colin looked at the envelope, and the color drained from his face.

"You went behind my back," Richard said, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a cold, controlled fury. "You threatened a mother. You threatened a seven-year-old girl who saved my son’s life."

"Richard, listen to me," Colin said, his hands rising in a defensive gesture. "I did it for the company. I did it for Ethan. You were emotional, you weren't thinking clearly. That family... they’re grifters. If they realized how much money you have, they’d sue us for negligence, or they'd leak to the press that our security failed Ethan at the airport. I was protecting the Harrison name!"

"You were protecting yourself," Richard said, stepping closer. "My investigators did a little digging into why you were so desperate to keep me from looking into our local charity partnerships. Do you want to tell me what they found, Colin? Or should I let the federal prosecutors explain it to you?"

Colin’s breath caught. His eyes darted to the door, but the security guards were blocking the exit.

"You’ve been skimming from the Harrison Foundation’s inner-city education fund for three years," Richard said, his voice cut like glass. "Transferring micro-deposits to shell companies in Delaware. You knew that if I got involved with Maya's family, if I personally set up a custom trust fund and had my personal accountants audit the local charity channels to build her a scholarship, the whole house of cards would fall."

"Richard, please," Colin whispered, his composure completely shattering. He fell back into his chair, looking suddenly very small. "I’ve given five years of my life to this company. I made you what you are!"

"You are fired, Colin. Effective immediately," Richard said, leaning over the desk, his eyes burning. "And as of ten minutes ago, the FBI has been handed every financial record, every IP address, and every forged signature you used to steal from children who needed that money. You won't be flying first class anymore. You’ll be lucky if you see the sun for the next ten years."

Richard turned his back on him. "Get him out of my sight."

Vance stepped forward, grabbing Colin by the arm and pulling him out of the chair. Colin struggled, his expensive suit wrinkling, his glasses sliding down his nose.

"You can't do this, Richard!" Colin screamed as he was dragged down the hallway, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "You need me! You'll regret this! You hear me? You'll regret this!"

Richard stood in the empty office, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below. The storm had passed, and the sun was beginning to break through the clouds, casting long, golden streaks across the water.

He took a deep breath, feeling a massive weight lift from his shoulders. For years, he had surrounded himself with people like Colin—people who valued power, prestige, and transactions. He had forgotten what real courage, real honesty, looked like.

He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

"Sarah?" Richard said when she answered. "It's Richard. It's over. You and Maya are safe. And I’d like to invite you both to my home this evening. There’s someone who is very eager to meet his hero."
