Chapter 7 - The Trial of Whispers

Six months passed, and the lives of the Lins changed completely.

They moved into a bright, airy apartment in Brookline, just ten minutes from the Harrison estate. Maya was enrolled in a wonderful private school where her curiosity was celebrated rather than dismissed, and she quickly became the top of her class. Sarah flourished in her role at the Harrison Foundation, directing millions of dollars directly into community centers, food banks, and after-school programs that she knew firsthand were lifelines for struggling families.

But shadows from the past have a way of lingering.

Colin Dray’s trial was approaching. Held in federal court, the case had become a media sensation. The fallen corporate giant, accused of embezzling millions from a children’s charity, was desperate.

From his holding cell, Colin’s lawyers launched a vicious public relations campaign. They leaked highly distorted stories to the tabloids, suggesting that Richard Harrison was using his immense wealth to frame an innocent employee to cover up his own "parental negligence" and that the "poor girl" who saved Ethan was part of a coordinated scheme by Sarah Lin to extort money from the Harrison family.

One morning, Sarah walked into the foundation offices to find a group of reporters waiting outside the lobby, their cameras flashing.

"Ms. Lin! Is it true you targeted Richard Harrison’s son at the airport?"

"Did you train your daughter to perform that rescue to secure a high-paying job?"

"Are you exploiting your child for a luxury lifestyle?"

Sarah felt a wave of cold panic wash over her. The old fears of being exposed, of being hunted, rushed back. She retreated inside, her heart pounding.

In his office, Richard was furious. He slammed his fist onto his desk as he watched a tabloid news segment displaying a photo of Maya’s old, patched backpack next to a headline: “Scam or Savior? The Millionaire's Kid and the Street Girl.”

"They're trying to drag a seven-year-old child through the mud to save a criminal," Richard snarled to Marcus Vance, who was now his head of personal security.

"It's a classic distraction tactic, Richard," Marcus said, his voice calm. "Dray’s defense wants to poison the jury pool. If they can make the public believe you’re a manipulative bully who fabricated the whole story, they can argue the embezzlement charges are also part of a frame-job."

"We need to put an end to this," Richard said. "Not for my sake, but for Maya and Sarah. They don't deserve this."

That afternoon, Richard drove to Sarah’s apartment. When she opened the door, her eyes were red-rimmed. Maya was in her room, thankfully distracted by her homework, but the tension in the home was palpable.

"I'm sorry, Richard," Sarah said, leaning against the doorframe. "Maybe... maybe it was a mistake to accept all of this. The press, the cameras... it’s exactly what I spent years running from. I can't let them hurt Maya."

Richard stepped inside, his expression filled with a quiet, solid determination. "Sarah, look at me. You spent years running because you were alone. You are not alone anymore. We are a team now. I built my career by fighting, and I promise you, I will fight for your family just as hard as I would for my own."

He took her hands, his touch warm and reassuring. "We aren't going to hide. We are going to tell the truth. In court. Under oath. Let them try to spin their lies when the world hears the real story."

Sarah looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity and strength there. She nodded, the fear in her chest slowly giving way to a fierce, protective resolve. "Okay," she said. "We'll fight."
