Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Snow

The backseat of Arthur Holloway’s Mercedes Maybach was warmer than any room Claire had stepped into in nearly a year. The leather smelled of rich cedar and expensive polish. Noah and Lily immediately buried themselves in the thick cashmere blankets Arthur’s driver, a stone-faced man named Marcus, handed back to them. Within minutes, the sound of their soft, rhythmic breathing filled the cabin as the children succumbed to exhaustion and warm air.
Claire sat rigid, her arm wrapped protectively around both kids, her eyes fixed on the rear window. The black SUV was following them at a distance, its high beams cutting through the whiteout condition of the interstate.
"Where are you taking us?" Claire asked, her knuckles white as she gripped Daniel’s letter.
"To my estate in Highland Park," Arthur replied from the front passenger seat. "It’s fortified. Private security, iron gates, surveillance. You’ll be safe there for the night."
"I don't want your luxury, Arthur. I want answers," Claire said, her tone sharp. "Daniel told me he broke ties with you because you tried to force him to marry into a rival real estate dynasty. He told me you called him a failure for choosing architecture over corporate takeover."
Arthur closed his eyes, a deep sigh escaping his chest. "All true. I was a tyrant. I thought power was the only thing that could shield a man from the world. I tried to build Daniel into my image, and when he fought back, my pride got the better of me. I let him walk away. I thought... I foolishly thought he would come crawling back once he realized how hard the world was."
Arthur turned around in his seat, his aging face lined with profound sorrow. "I was too proud to call him. Even when I heard he had twins. Even when I saw photos of him online, building a modest life with you. I told myself I was teaching him a lesson. But the lesson was mine to learn, Claire. When he walked into my office eleven months ago, bruised, desperate, and begging for protection—not for himself, but for you and the kids—I realized I had traded my only son for a pile of gold."
"Then why didn't you come for us eleven months ago?" Claire asked, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Why leave us to suffer? I sold my mother's wedding ring to pay rent last month, Arthur! My children ate dry cereal for dinner yesterday!"
"Because Daniel made me swear a blood oath," Arthur said softly. "He believed that if I interfered too soon, the men behind Sterling—led by a man named Victor Vance—would realize I had the evidence. Vance is a psychopath with political backing. Daniel thought that if you lived quietly, Vance would assume the evidence was lost in the river with his car. Daniel wanted me to wait until his legal trust unlocked on the twins' ninth birthday. But three days ago, Vance’s men raided Daniel’s old storage unit in Chicago. That meant they were hunting again. I couldn't wait any longer."
Suddenly, Marcus’s voice cut through the heavy silence. "Sir. We have a problem."
Claire looked up. The black SUV behind them was accelerating, its engine roaring over the howl of the blizzard. Another set of headlights appeared from a side ramp ahead, threatening to cut them off.
"They're forcing us off the highway," Marcus said calmly, his hands steady on the steering wheel. "Hold on back there."
"Marcus, do not engage," Arthur commanded. "Just get us through the toll barrier."
The dark SUV slammed into the rear bumper of the Maybach. The violent jolting woke Lily with a scream. Noah gasped, clutching Claire’s arm.
"Mommy! What's happening?!" Lily cried.
"Shh, baby, stay down! Get under the blankets!" Claire yelled, threw her body over her children, shielding them with her own frame.
The SUV rammed them again, forcing the Maybach onto the icy shoulder. Snow sprayed against the windows like gravel. Marcus stomped on the gas, the heavy luxury sedan fish-tailing before its traction control kicked in, tearing away from the attacker. Up ahead, the lights of a closed weigh station flickered in the storm.
Marcus spun the wheel, sliding the heavy car behind an abandoned semi-truck trailer, cutting the headlights instantly. The two pursuing SUVs thundered past on the highway, their red taillights disappearing into the swirl of white.
Silence returned to the cabin, saved for the heavy panting of four adults and the terrified whimpers of two children.

Arthur looked back at Claire, his face pale. "They aren't just looking for files anymore, Claire. They know I have you. Victor Vance wants to wipe the entire Holloway line off the map."
Claire looked down at the silver USB drive in her hand. "Then we stop running," she said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute determination she didn't know she possessed. "Daniel gave his life to protect us from these monsters. Tell me what’s on this drive, Arthur. Tell me how we ruin them."
