Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Legacy

Three weeks later, the snow in Chicago was soft and fresh, lacking the bitter cruelty of Christmas Eve.

In a towering federal courtroom overlooking the city, the final legal battle of the Sterling Development Group was coming to a dramatic end. Victor Vance, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and wheelchair-bound from severe frostbite complications, sat beside his battery of high-priced defense lawyers.

Claire sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored black wool coat. Next to her sat Arthur, looking distinguished and decades younger, holding Noah’s small hand in his left and Lily’s in his right.

The State Attorney General stood before the judge, holding up the silver USB drive and the leather journal recovered from Oakridge.

"Your Honor," the prosecutor announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "The evidence unlocked from Daniel Holloway’s private archives detail over twelve years of systematic corporate negligence, bribery of state inspectors, illegal chemical dumping, and, most damningly, the pre-meditated sabotage of Daniel Holloway’s vehicle on February 12th."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowded courtroom. News reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks.

"Furthermore," the prosecutor continued, "the defense’s attempt to claim these documents were forged has been thoroughly debunked by federal forensic experts. Daniel Holloway sacrificed his life to ensure this truth would come to light."

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack. "In light of the overwhelming evidence, bail is denied. Victor Vance and his co-conspirators will remain in federal custody pending trial for first-degree murder, racketeering, and environmental terrorism."

As officers wheeled Vance away, he turned to glance at Claire. There was no arrogance left in his eyes—only the hollow glare of a man who had lost everything to the truth he tried to bury.

Claire took a deep, clear breath. For the first time in eleven months, the heavy, suffocating band around her chest loosened. Daniel was gone, but his name was clear. He was not a failed architect who died in a careless car crash; he was a hero who had fought the monsters of the world to keep his family safe.

Outside the courthouse, a wall of reporters and news cameras waited on the steps. Microphones were shoved into Arthur’s face.

"Mr. Holloway! Is it true that Holloway Enterprises is liquidating its assets in the Sterling Development zones?"

Arthur took a step forward, putting a arm around Claire’s shoulders. "Holloway Enterprises is doing something much better," Arthur said into the flashing lights. "We are establishing the Daniel Holloway Environmental Protection Fund. Fifty million dollars will be immediately directed to cleaning up the lands in Oakridge and supporting the families affected by corporate negligence."

"And what about your family, Mr. Holloway?" a reporter asked. "Reports say you’ve reconciled with your late son’s family?"

Arthur looked down at Claire, then at Noah and Lily, who were watching him with wide, trusting eyes.

"I didn't reconcile with them," Arthur said, his voice breaking with genuine pride. "They saved me. They showed me what family actually means."
