Chapter 6 – The Adoption Secret

The envelope felt heavier than paper should.

Evelyn Vaughn stared at the seven words written across its front.

Open after Derek learns the truth.

Her fingers trembled so violently that she nearly dropped it.

She knew Jonathan Carter's handwriting.

She also knew something no one else in the ballroom knew.

Jonathan Carter had never written meaningless letters.

If he left instructions...

Someone's world was about to collapse.

Across the ballroom, reporters continued broadcasting live.

Camera flashes lit the room like silent lightning.

The headlines had already spread across every major business network.

Billionaire Bride Reclaims Family Empire.

Wedding Ends in Divorce Forty-Two Minutes After Ceremony.

Carter Heiress Named CEO.

But none of those headlines would matter once the final secret came to light.

Richard Sterling quietly approached Evelyn.

"You should open it now."

She looked at him.

"Are you certain?"

He nodded.

"Mr. Carter was very specific."

She slowly broke the seal.

Inside rested only a single folded sheet of paper.

She unfolded it carefully.

The first sentence stole the color from her face.

Richard watched silently.

"What does it say?" he asked.

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward Lena.

The young woman was still standing beside Derek, clutching one of the twins while pretending everything could somehow still be repaired.

Poor girl...

She had absolutely no idea.

Evelyn whispered,

"My God..."

Richard frowned.

"What is it?"

She handed him the letter.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then he closed them.

"So..."

he sighed quietly,

"He finally decided to tell the truth."

My father noticed their expressions immediately.

"Evelyn?"

She looked toward him.

"Frank..."

His stomach tightened.

"What?"

Her voice cracked.

"We can't hide it anymore."

The ballroom slowly became quiet once again.

Everyone sensed another revelation approaching.

Derek looked exhausted.

"What now?"

He laughed bitterly.

"Is there another company she secretly owns?"

Nobody answered.

Instead...

Richard stepped into the center of the ballroom.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

His calm voice immediately drew every eye toward him.

"There is one final matter concerning the Carter estate."

Derek rubbed his forehead.

"Can this wait?"

"No."

Richard's expression remained solemn.

"It has already waited twenty-four years."

Lena frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Richard looked directly at her.

"It concerns you."

Her smile faded.

"Me?"

"Yes."

She exchanged a confused glance with her adoptive mother.

"What about me?"

My stepmother suddenly stepped forward.

"Richard."

Her voice was unusually sharp.

"This isn't the place."

He met her gaze without fear.

"Actually..."

"It is exactly the place."

She swallowed.

"No."

"Yes."

The room grew so silent that the faint breathing of the sleeping babies could be heard.

Richard opened another folder from the second briefcase.

"This document has remained sealed for twenty-four years."

He placed it on the table.

"It contains adoption records."

Lena blinked.

"I know I'm adopted."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"You don't need to announce it."

"I'm not announcing your adoption."

He paused.

"I'm announcing why it happened."

The room froze.

My father suddenly looked terrified.

"Richard..."

"Frank."

Richard's voice softened.

"You should have told them years ago."

"I couldn't."

"You chose not to."

Those words hit harder than accusations.

My father's shoulders slumped.

My stepmother's breathing became uneven.

Lena looked between them.

"What is everyone talking about?"

No one answered.

Richard slowly removed a faded hospital record.

"This document comes from St. Matthew's Medical Center."

He placed it beside the adoption certificate.

"It records two births."

Lena frowned.

"So?"

Richard continued.

"Both births occurred on the same day."

A strange feeling settled over me.

Something deep inside whispered that this wasn't merely about Lena's adoption.

Richard looked directly at me.

"Maya..."

I felt my heartbeat quicken.

"Yes?"

"Your grandfather asked that you hear this with everyone else."

I nodded slowly.

"Go on."

Richard took a deep breath.

"Twenty-four years ago..."

"...two little girls were born within nineteen minutes of each other."

The ballroom remained silent.

"The first child..."

He looked toward my father.

"...was Maya Carter."

I already knew that.

"The second child..."

His eyes moved toward Lena.

"...was a baby abandoned in the maternity ward."

Lena nodded slowly.

"I know."

"My biological parents left me."

Richard hesitated.

"No."

She frowned.

"What?"

"They never abandoned you."

The words echoed through the ballroom.

"What?"

Lena laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

Richard placed another document on the table.

"Your biological mother died during childbirth."

Lena stopped smiling.

"And your biological father..."

He turned toward my father.

"...never knew you existed."

Every sound disappeared.

Frank Carter looked as though the earth had vanished beneath his feet.

Lena stared at him.

No.

She stared through him.

"What..."

Her voice barely emerged.

"...did you just say?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Frank Carter..."

"...is your biological father."

The ballroom erupted.

People gasped.

Several guests stood in disbelief.

One reporter accidentally dropped his camera.

My own knees nearly gave way.

"What?"

I whispered.

"No..."

Lena looked at my father.

Then at me.

Then back again.

She laughed.

A broken, frightened laugh.

"Stop."

No one moved.

"This isn't funny."

Richard didn't flinch.

"It's true."

"My father is dead."

"No."

"He left me."

"No."

"He didn't want me."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"He spent twenty-four years believing you had died with your mother."

Lena's breathing became frantic.

She looked toward my stepmother.

"Mom?"

Silence.

"Mom..."

Tears began filling Lena's eyes.

"Tell him."

Still nothing.

"Tell him he's lying."

My stepmother closed her eyes.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice was barely audible.

"He isn't."

The room exploded again.

Lena staggered backward.

"No."

"I adopted you."

"No."

"Because Frank never knew."

"No!"

"You were never supposed to find out."

The baby in Lena's arms woke and began crying loudly.

She barely noticed.

She could only stare at the woman who had raised her.

"You lied..."

My stepmother burst into tears.

"I loved you."

"You lied!"

"I was trying to protect everyone."

"You let me hate Maya."

"I know."

"You let me believe her father chose her instead of me."

"I know."

"You watched us become enemies."

Each accusation cut deeper.

"I know."

My father covered his face with both hands.

"I searched for you."

Lena looked toward him.

"What?"

"I searched every hospital."

"I hired investigators."

"I never stopped looking."

His voice broke completely.

"They told me my baby had died."

Richard quietly produced another document.

"The death certificate was forged."

Every eye turned toward my stepmother.

She collapsed into a nearby chair.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?" Frank asked.

She looked up through tears.

"I loved you."

He stared blankly.

"You loved me?"

"You never loved me back."

Silence.

"When Emily died..."

She glanced toward Lena.

"...I saw my chance."

The room seemed to stop breathing.

"I bribed a nurse."

Frank's face went white.

"I changed the records."

"No..."

"I told everyone the baby had died."

"No..."

"Then I adopted her six months later."

Lena stared at her in horror.

"You..."

"I wanted us to become a family."

Frank whispered,

"You stole my daughter."

"I loved her."

"You stole my daughter."

His voice echoed across the ballroom.

"You let Maya grow up believing she was an only child."

"I know."

"You let Lena grow up believing nobody wanted her."

"I know."

"You destroyed both of them."

My stepmother broke down completely.

"I thought I could fix it."

Instead...

She had destroyed an entire family.

I slowly walked toward Lena.

She looked completely lost.

For years...

She had believed I was the privileged daughter.

The chosen one.

The loved child.

Now she had learned the truth.

We had both been victims.

Just in different ways.

She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"I hated you."

"I know."

"I thought Dad loved you more."

"I know."

"I ruined your marriage."

I looked at the crying baby in her arms.

Then back into her eyes.

"You didn't ruin it."

"Derek did."

She shook her head.

"I helped."

"You believed lies."

"So did I."

For the first time in twenty-four years...

Neither of us saw an enemy.

Only another woman whose life had been manipulated by someone else's selfishness.

Behind us...

Derek suddenly frowned.

"Wait."

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked at Richard.

"So Lena..."

"...is Maya's sister?"

Richard nodded.

"Half-sister."

Derek's face slowly drained of color.

His eyes widened as another realization struck him.

He looked from Maya...

to Lena...

then toward the sleeping twins.

"No..."

His whisper was barely audible.

Richard looked at him gravely.

"There is still one document we haven't discussed."

He opened the final folder.

Across its cover, in bold black letters, were three words.

PATERNITY RESULTS

Derek's heartbeat thundered inside his chest.

"No..."

Richard slowly looked up.

"I'm afraid..."

"...the truth about these twins is even more devastating."

May you like

And as every eye in the ballroom fixed upon the unopened envelope...

Derek realized the nightmare had only just begun.
