Chapter 8 – Everything They Stole

The photograph lay in the center of the table like a ghost from another lifetime.

No one spoke.

Not Maya.

Not Lena.

Not Frank.

Not even Richard Sterling.

On the back of the faded picture, the words seemed darker than the ink itself.

Only one of them is a Carter.

The ballroom, which only hours earlier had been prepared for a wedding reception, had become something else entirely.

A courtroom.

A confession booth.

A battlefield built from decades of lies.

Claire Brooks carefully slipped on a pair of evidence gloves before picking up the photograph.

"This was recovered from Derek Vaughn's private office."

Richard frowned.

"His office?"

Claire nodded.

"It wasn't hidden in a safe."

"It was locked inside a desk drawer beneath a false bottom."

Frank looked confused.

"Why would Derek have this?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

Richard took the hospital bracelet from the evidence box.

Its plastic had yellowed with age.

The ink was faded, but one detail remained legible.

Baby Girl B – 2:18 A.M.

He compared it with the adoption records spread across the table.

His expression darkened.

"This bracelet belongs to Lena."

Claire looked at him.

"You're certain?"

"I prepared these records myself twenty-four years ago."

He placed the bracelet beside the adoption certificate.

"They match."

Maya slowly looked toward Lena.

"So Derek knew."

Lena's voice trembled.

"How?"

"I never told him I was adopted."

Claire opened a slim folder.

"We found something else."

She removed printed copies of emails.

Hundreds of them.

Every page carried the same sender.

Miles Grant. Private Investigator.

Richard recognized the name immediately.

"He specializes in genealogy."

Claire nodded.

"Derek hired him eighteen months ago."

Frank frowned.

"Eighteen months..."

Maya's heart sank.

"The same time I started investigating the missing company funds."

Claire looked at her.

"Exactly."

She handed Maya the first report.

Maya scanned the pages.

Each sentence tightened the knot in her stomach.

Family trees.

Birth records.

Hospital archives.

Adoption files.

DNA research.

Derek hadn't only been stealing money.

He had been investigating her family.

"He knew," Maya whispered.

Richard nodded.

"He knew long before today's wedding."

Lena stared blankly.

"But why?"

Claire answered quietly.

"Because he believed one of you wasn't a Carter."

Silence.

Frank covered his face.

"This is madness."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This was strategy."

He looked toward Maya.

"Derek wanted complete control of Carter Technologies."

Maya understood immediately.

"If I wasn't biologically a Carter..."

Richard finished her sentence.

"...he could challenge your inheritance."

Claire nodded.

"He was building a legal case."

"He intended to destroy your claim after marrying you."

Lena's breathing became uneven.

"So..."

"He never loved either of us."

Maya looked at her sister.

"No."

"He loved ownership."

For the first time since they had met, neither woman felt jealousy.

Only grief.

They had both been used.

One as a wife.

The other as a weapon.

Outside, the rain continued falling.

Television crews remained gathered around the hotel entrance.

Across the country, the story dominated every news channel.

Financial markets buzzed with speculation.

Carter Technologies stock climbed rapidly as investors celebrated Maya's appointment.

The Vaughn family's holdings, meanwhile, collapsed by the minute.

Inside a downtown detention center, Derek sat alone in an interview room.

His tuxedo jacket had been taken.

His expensive watch had been logged as evidence.

The diamond cufflinks his father had once called a family legacy now rested in a plastic bag with a barcode.

For the first time in years...

He had nothing.

Not even his phone.

The steel door opened.

Claire Brooks stepped inside carrying another file.

Derek looked up.

"What now?"

She placed the folder on the table.

"Your accountant has confessed."

His shoulders stiffened.

"What?"

"He accepted immunity in exchange for full cooperation."

Derek closed his eyes.

"Simon..."

Claire continued.

"He provided passwords."

"Account numbers."

"Transfer records."

"Everything."

Derek leaned back slowly.

"It's over."

Claire didn't answer.

Because they both knew it was.

Back at the hotel...

Richard spread dozens of hospital documents across a long conference table.

Every page had been preserved for decades.

Every signature examined.

Every date verified.

Frank stood beside him.

His hands trembled.

"I don't understand."

"The records say Maya is my daughter."

"They also say Lena is."

Richard nodded.

"One birth certificate is original."

"The other is a certified replacement."

Claire looked closer.

"Which one?"

Richard sighed.

"That's exactly what we need to determine."

My stepmother sat alone in the corner.

She looked twenty years older than she had that morning.

Her mascara had long since disappeared beneath endless tears.

Finally...

She spoke.

"I burned some of the records."

Everyone looked at her.

Frank's voice hardened.

"What?"

She nodded slowly.

"After I changed the files..."

"I destroyed everything I could find."

Claire frowned.

"You destroyed medical evidence?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She looked at Lena.

"Because I thought if no one could prove the truth..."

"...we could become a real family."

Frank's voice broke.

"You didn't create a family."

"You destroyed one."

Hours later...

The ballroom had emptied completely.

Only family remained.

Maya stood alone beside the enormous windows overlooking the city.

Her wedding dress still shimmered beneath the lights.

She had never changed.

Somehow...

It no longer felt like a wedding gown.

It felt like armor.

Soft footsteps approached behind her.

Lena.

"I wasn't sure you'd want to see me."

Maya smiled faintly.

"I'm glad you came."

Lena stood beside her.

For several minutes they simply watched the rain.

Finally...

Lena whispered,

"When we were children..."

"I broke your favorite music box."

Maya laughed quietly.

"I know."

"I blamed you."

"I know."

"I always thought Dad loved you more."

Maya looked at the city below.

"I thought he loved you more."

Lena stared at her.

"What?"

"You got all his attention."

"I got all his expectations."

Neither of them had realized the truth.

Frank had loved both daughters.

He had simply been too blind to see how differently they experienced that love.

Lena wiped away another tear.

"I'm tired of hating you."

Maya reached for her hand.

"Then don't."

For the first time in their lives...

The sisters stood together.

Not because every wound had healed.

But because they had finally learned who had caused them.

The conference room doors opened.

Richard entered carrying a single leather journal.

"I found this in Jonathan Carter's private archive."

Maya recognized it instantly.

"My grandfather's journal."

Richard nodded.

"He left instructions."

He opened the worn pages carefully.

One sentence had been underlined in blue ink.

If anyone ever questions Maya's birthright, the answer is not in the hospital. It is inside the locket.

Everyone exchanged confused looks.

"Locket?" Frank asked.

Richard looked toward Maya.

"Your grandmother's necklace."

Maya instinctively touched her neck.

It wasn't there.

She had left it at home while preparing for the wedding.

"My grandmother gave it to me before she died."

Richard smiled.

"Then Jonathan expected this day."

Claire frowned.

"What's inside it?"

Richard closed the journal.

"I don't know."

"He never told me."

"But whatever it contains..."

He looked around the room.

"...it was important enough for him to write that everything depended on it."

At that exact moment...

Claire's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Brooks."

She listened silently.

Her expression changed.

"What do you mean he's gone?"

Everyone looked toward her.

She lowered the phone slowly.

"The transport vehicle carrying Derek Vaughn..."

She paused.

"...never arrived at the detention center."

Frank frowned.

"What?"

Claire's voice became grim.

"The officers were found unconscious."

"The vehicle was abandoned."

"And Derek Vaughn..."

She looked directly at Maya.

"...has disappeared."

A cold silence settled over the room.

Richard closed the journal.

"So he knows."

Maya felt a strange certainty settle inside her.

"No."

She looked toward the rain-soaked city.

"He doesn't know the truth."

She turned back toward her family.

"He thinks running will save him."

Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.

Somewhere beyond the city lights...

A desperate man was running with nothing left to lose.

And hidden inside an old silver locket...

Lay the final secret Jonathan Carter had protected for more than twenty years.

May you like

A secret powerful enough to destroy every lie...

Or finally bring a broken family back together.
