Chapter 7 - The Restoration

Three weeks after the raid at the Harbor View Club, the legal and criminal fallout had swept clean through the city.

Julian Vance and his conspirators were permanently removed, while Dr. Sterling was formally indicted on multiple counts of medical fraud, evidence tampering, and corporate conspiracy. The State Medical Board issued an unprecedented public apology to Hannah Brooks, fully reinstating her medical license and scrubbing her record clean.

Yet, despite her victory, Hannah sat in her small apartment on Elm Street, staring at her newly restored medical credentials resting on her wooden kitchen table.

She had her life back. She had her career back.

So why did her apartment feel so quiet? Why did the silence feel so heavy?

Her phone chimed on the table. It was a message from an unknown number: Look out your window.

Hannah walked to the small bay window of her third-floor apartment and looked down at the street below.

Parked along the curb was a sleek black sedan. Standing beside the rear door, wearing a tailored navy coat and leaning lightly on a silver-handled cane, was Nicholas Vale.

He looked up at her window, his dark eyes catching hers across the cool evening air.

Hannah pulled her coat off the wall hook, ran down the narrow carpeted stairs, and pushed open the front door of her building into the crisp night air.

Nicholas stepped forward, a soft, warm smile gracing his face as he watched her approach.

"You're not supposed to be standing out in the cold," Hannah said, trying to maintain her strict nurse’s persona, though her heart was pounding frantically against her chest.

"I came to deliver something in person," Nicholas said softly, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out an official document bearing the seal of the City Health Department.

Hannah looked at the paper. It was an appointment letter naming her as the chief Medical Director of the newly funded Evelyn Vale Community Health Center in East Baltimore—a brand-new, fifty-million-dollar state-of-the-art free clinic.

"You built a clinic?" Hannah gasped, her eyes widening in shock.

"You spent four years cleaning floors because corrupt men stole your voice," Nicholas said, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. "I built a place where no one can ever quiet you again."
