Chapter 5 - The Security Archive

The main living room of the Rossi estate looked like a military command post.

Paramedics were crouched near the plush leather sofa, administering supplemental oxygen to Lily while she sat wrapped in a warm fleece blanket. She refused to let go of my right hand, her small fingers holding onto my thumb like a lifeline while a female paramedic treated the deep cut on my cheek and wrapped my crushed left hand in tight medical bandages.

In the center of the room, standing between two tall, armed Rossi soldiers, was Victoria Kensington.

Her platinum hair was a tangled mess, her lip was bleeding from where Mateo had pinned her to the counter, and her expensive cashmere sweater was stained with dust. Beside her stood her father, Arthur Kensington—a powerful, grey-haired corporate attorney who had arrived twenty minutes after receiving a frantic text from his daughter.

"This is an outrage, Leo!" Arthur Kensington barked, pacing across the hardwood floor, waving a polished gold fountain pen in the air. "You have your armed thugs holding my daughter against her will! She is your fiancée! If she made a minor mistake regarding the child's discipline, it is a private matter! You cannot hold her here like a prisoner!"

Leo sat behind a small glass table in the corner of the room, a lit cigarette resting between his fingers. He hadn't touched his drink. He hadn't raised his voice once.

Beside him sat a young man in a dark suit holding a high-end tactical laptop connected to the estate’s main server hub.

"A minor mistake, Arthur?" Leo asked quietly, blowing a thin plume of grey smoke toward the tall ceiling. "Your daughter locked a seven-year-old child with severe asthma into an unheated stone cellar, took her inhaler, and attempted to turn away the paramedics."

"She didn't know the child was sick!" Arthur countered loudly, turning to look at Victoria for support. "Victoria thought Lily was just hiding! This fat housekeeper here..." He pointed his gold pen at me with pure disgust. "...she panicked, created a scene, and attacked my daughter's private guards! Victoria was acting in self-defense!"

Victoria quickly nodded, her eyes filling with fake, practiced tears as she looked at Leo.

"Yes, Leo! Please, you have to believe me!" Victoria cried out, her voice dripping with artificial sorrow. "I love Lily! I would never hurt her! Beatrice has been jealous of me since the day I moved in! She’s trying to frame me so you'll give her a bigger salary! She made up the whole thing!"

I kept my mouth shut. I didn't need to defend myself. I felt Lily’s small hand tighten around my thumb, and that was the only truth that mattered in that room.

Leo took a slow drag from his cigarette, then tapped the ash into a glass tray.

"Julian," Leo said quietly to the young man with the laptop. "Open the archive."

Julian typed rapidly on the keyboard. A second later, the massive seventy-inch flat-screen television mounted above the marble fireplace flared to life.

Arthur Kensington frowned. "What is this? Some manipulated footage from your house cameras?"

"This estate doesn't run on house cameras, Arthur," Leo said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "My late wife was murdered five years ago by an insider leak in my organization. Since that day, every room in this house, every corridor, every phone line, and every personal device connected to the house Wi-Fi has been continuously recorded to an off-site, encrypted server in Switzerland."

Victoria’s fake tears instantly froze on her face. Her eyes drifted slowly toward the television screen.

"Including," Leo added with a cold, terrifying smile, "the hidden microphones built into the light fixtures of the guest suites."

Julian hit the spacebar.

The high-definition audio and video roared through the living room surround-sound speakers.

The screen showed Victoria’s private dressing room from three weeks prior. Victoria was sitting at her vanity table, pouring two glasses of champagne, speaking to a tall, dark-haired man sitting on the sofa behind her—a man I instantly recognized as Julian Vance, the chief financial rival of the Rossi logistics empire.

"How long until the marriage is finalized, Victoria?" Vance’s voice echoed clearly through the room.

Victoria’s on-screen image laughed—a dark, cold, metallic sound that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Two months," Victoria on the screen replied, taking a sip of champagne. "Leo is completely blind. He thinks I'm the perfect, charity-loving stepmother. Once the marriage certificate is signed, my father’s firm will execute the trust transfer. I'll have power-of-attorney over Lily's inheritance funds from her mother's estate."

"And the kid?" Vance asked.

Victoria’s on-screen face twisted into a sneer of pure hatred. "The little brat is constantly in the way. She looks just like her dead mother. Don't worry, once the legal control is ours, I'll have her declared mentally unfit due to her 'trauma' and sent to a private boarding facility in Switzerland. She won't be a problem."

The room went completely, suffocatingly quiet.

Arthur Kensington’s jaw dropped. The gold fountain pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the floor.

Victoria’s face went from pale to completely ash-grey. She staggered back a step, her knees knocking together.

"Leo..." Victoria whispered, her voice barely audible. "Leo, that... that was just talk... I was negotiating with Vance to get information for you—"

"Julian," Leo interrupted calmly. "Skip to three hours ago. The kitchen audio."

Julian hit another key.

The screen changed to the kitchen feed from earlier that evening.

The video showed Victoria standing over small Lily at the dining table. It showed Victoria snatching Lily’s dinner plate away, laughing as Lily began to cry. It showed Victoria grabbing Lily by her arm, dragging her across the kitchen, and shoving her down the cellar steps before slamming the iron door shut.

Then came the audio from forty minutes ago.

My voice echoing through the kitchen: "She's having an asthma attack! Give me the keys!"

Victoria’s voice, cold and ruthless: "Let the little bastard choke. It'll save me the trouble of sending her to Europe."
